    super wrenches

The guys still sell every year at the Mid Somerset Show opposite our Beekeeping tent, still doing pull-ups on the scaffold bar. Not on till August though. Phil

    PMT

I just read the thread to my missus, she understood it, said with a measure of surprise 'why would she use a chisel' unfortunately followed with 'I'd have used a saw, they can cut concrete can't they' Extra lock put on the workshop already. Phil

    Bowls from Woods

To join without altering the shape, I cut in approx 3mm from the edge with a bedan to a depth of 6mm in both halves. A thin strip of walnut veneer, 2mm thick 12mm wide and same length as circumference, soaked in boiling water to enable it to bend internally, was glued in the bottom rebate. The...

How sharp, how often & how?

"Hand tool blades travel at inches per minute, most turning tasks are at something like 26 FT per minute so with the average abrasiveness of turning blanks the finite edge lasts just a few seconds." Hi Chas, unless I'm wrong, the turning rate is way more. Even a 4" dia spindle (12"...

Pen turning..... what do I need?

I have that one, but bent the mandrel. When in Axminster I picked this one up http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-ev ... l-ax942635. It's only a fiver extra over the deluxe, but much, much nicer to use especially when I make two types of pen at the same time and I swap pieces around between...

    Sorby Pro Edge DVD

I rang Sorby and they sent a DVD in the post FOC. But as stated most was already on YouTube. As for the switch being in to 'wrong' place, it wouldn't be a major redesign to place it at the left hand side instead of on top, cos it's certainly not the perfect location. I also find the switch...

Missing a new Axminster catalogue ? worry no more.....

Had a S&B catalogue through the letterbox last week. Still reading the articles today. Good bog time reading for sure. Their reveals of the new Record lathes should just about kill the sales of old stock in some stores. Going to mt2 for a start on the larger ones. Phil

    Forum Users Bandsaws

After all the excellent reviews and comments I tried to purchase a Record BS400, but Yandles said delivery would be via 16 tonne HGV of even a 40' trailer, so couldn't go with that as last 1/2 mile to house is only readily accessible by 7.5 tonne. Ordered a Jet JWBS16 which had £200 off at the...

Buying advice wanted - soldering irons?

I do a lot of laptop DC socket replacement on laptops as well as general circuit board solder work and use this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/60W-Professio ... Swu4BVj9Ke It has replaceable tips, I keep a selection of sizes for various applications. Temperature control is decent. Phil

After a new combination sander - need a little advice

Glad yours turned up. As you say, not quiet, but certainly works well. I ordered this yesterday with a pack of 10 discs to try it out. http://www.anvil-trading.com/products/p ... Qty-1.html See how we get on when it arrives. Phil

After a new combination sander - need a little advice

That's the only reason I stick to the same grit. They are too expensive to throw away half used so is impractical to change grits until one becomes unusable. 150 is a good all round cut/finish grade.

After a new combination sander - need a little advice

The problem I would foresee with Velcro backing is that it would make the face 'spongy' Be interesting to hear from someone who runs with Velcro discs. Yes, the discs are certainly unusable when removed, which is a bi***h of a job in itself, but the surface is absolutely flat and solid in...

After a new combination sander - need a little advice

Not sure what Axminter's pricing policy is. In December I bought the Jet 3520b lathe from them for £2599 including the bed extension. Today the same package is £3088. Last week I paid £1099 for the jet 16" bandsaw with a £37 m42 blade, today it is £1299 bare unit. I think it's a case of grab...

After a new combination sander - need a little advice

They certainly are the same machine with a different coat of paint. Today I would have gone with the Axi unit and saved the £100 I was prepared to go to £600 but there was nothing up to that price with any more benefit for the extra money. I do think there is a void in that price point for a...

After a new combination sander - need a little advice

Hi I had the same dilemma last year, upgrading from a 6" disc plus 4" belt to something a lot more substantial. The offer wasn't on with the Axi hobby model and I went with the Record for the extra two years warranty for the £50 extra. It's a solid enough piece of kit, but I wouldn't...

    Bandsaw replacement

Hi AJB All credit to Axminster, paid for the saw at 3pm Tuesday, delivered here to my patio at 10:00 this morning, most companies struggle to deliver anything within a week at this time of year, they managed a 140kg piece of kit in 19 hours. I'm impressed. The review is in draft progress...

    Bandsaw replacement

Hi BB The smoothness of the blade height adjuster, the clamping action of the fence and the paint finish ( possibly better than my Jeep) sealed the fate of the Axi trade. However, Had an offer of a 7.5 ton delivery (Frome is 10 miles away) been an option, I would have had the Record 400 over the...
