    More sharpening woes

+1, will never go back to a wheel of any sort after a Proedge. So many uses beyond just sharpening that wheels don't do as well or as safely. Phil

CL4 VSLK click on down powering

On the Jet 3520b the inverter is the NVR, the switch on the headstock only depowers the motor, not the inverter. It also clicks several seconds after the wall switch is turned off. If the headstock switch is left and when turned off at the wall, it must be turned off and back on to start th...

    Motor capacitor tripping advice

The motor is sited under the tub and it can certainly get damp there, although there is a good rubber seal on the cable box cover. Cheers Phil

    Motor capacitor tripping advice

Motors have been in use for 10 years on the hot tub, so not constant but regular use. I can't spin the spindle end as it is in an enclosed water pump, but I can spin the cooling fan fins freely through the grill, so I at least know the rotor spins freely but can't safely rotate it to start...

    Motor capacitor tripping advice

Thanks for the helpful advice. It is the MCB that trips, not the rcd. I attach a couple of pics of the blown one, not an ideal sight, but better than a blown motor. Will try to source a replacement, this one looks as though it will fit the bill, http://www.conrad-electronic.co.uk/ce/e ...

    Motor capacitor tripping advice

Hi All I have a hot tub that trips the breaker when pump 2 is started. Pumps 1 and 3 run fine. I have removed the terminal cover and the capacitor is shot, as in half of it melted away. it is a 1.27.6caz.mkp 30uf two wire going to motor terminals. I have removed the capacitor from the motor...

    Workshop lighting (again)

No problem, I have 5 metres of sm50 led's left over from a project last year so will be making some small lighting units to go around the lathe to improve light at specific points. These are only 12v so will run from a 12v computer monitor transformer. Phil

My first table saw - so many options!

Unfortunately there is the store display model in Axminster and Cardiff which I could take home as I did the Jet bandsaw. So looks like it could be an expensive fun trip to Devon tomorrow. (Axminster will draw the stock back from a store to deliver to you if you ask nicely and can wait a couple...

    Workshop lighting (again)

In my shop 12 months ago I replaced 15 four tube 600mm square fluorescent fittings (was replacing at least one tube over week and the odd unit every three of four months) with ten 600mm led panels. Runs direct from 240v through their own individual driver. The light is twice as bright, a clean...

    Large hawthorn stump

Semtex or C4 should sort it if a local turner won't remove it. I would if closer as it is one of the best wood species I have ever turned. Hard as iron when seasoned, some superb graining and colour. Light pulls and pens look especially good from the smaller branches using heart and sap...

My first table saw - so many options!

Yes, Mike Walt for the Bosch review. I can't justify, but would really like the Axminter AW10BSB2 http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-trade-series-aw10bsb2-saw-bench-ax884465 for a little more than the Bosch. So I'm holding out till either I can justify it or just say sod it I'm a long time...

    Record Power BS400 Bandsaw Review

Certainly disappointment for not having instant gratification is not confined to RP bandsaws. My new 16" Jet was an absolute dog and I'd thought I'd bought a real lemon. However after readjusting everything, replacing supplied blade with a Tufsaw blade, carefully setting it all up again if ran...

    Fireproof foamy

Stiffly mixed Vermiculite with Portland cement gives a good material to work with to fill larger gaps. Totally fireproof. Phil

    My lathe has gone catawampus

How come the rewiring to a remote didn't affect the warranty at all? I too have altered the loom as you have, but assumed I had forfeited the warranty at least on the electrical side. Phil

    Sigh. Sharpening woes.

+1 for pro edge, been down the route of high speed, low speed and slow wet systems and would never go back to any of them after using the pro edge. Predominately for turning, but gets used for chisels, knives, axes and lawn mower blades as well. Phil

    Which epoxy?

I thought it was reasonable value at £18 a pack till now. Phil

    Which epoxy?

Have used it for several years for pen making and general repairs around the house, loads of uses. eBay is £6 a pack cheaper than Axi where I usually get it. It does however not like being left in a really cold shed through the winter, this is best kept indoors when cold in the workshop. It...

How long does wood dust take to settle?

I follow Jacob's routine. Once a week or so, as I leave the workshop and still wearing a dust mask, I use the air blower to remove find dust that has settled on shelves, tops of machines, between jars and tools on the shelves etc. I do have a decent chip and dust removal system to each machine...
