I only have a live ring centre, something to add to the purchase list.

    Henry + cyclone or NV750 ?

Well I think every workshop should have a Henry! They are reliable and tough and you could just use it directly connected to your tools, moving it round as needed. None of the activities you mention will generate a huge volume of dust / shavings. You'll only use one on the lathe when sanding. If...

Axminster Chuck Jaw Dovetail Sizes - Odd range - Any other suppliers?

Thanks Paul, I think you're probably right, I need to spend more time getting my reverse chucking sorted. I've done it a few times, tried a squashed tennis ball, a flat plate with none slip matting and just putting it over the top of the chuck but I've always found the centre and tailstock to...

Axminster Chuck Jaw Dovetail Sizes - Odd range - Any other suppliers?

I have an Axminster chuck plus the type A, B & C dovetail jaws. The smallest dovetailed tenon the type A jaws will grip is about 58mm which I frequently find too large. I don't have any reversing jaws so the bowl tenon is often my finished foot. The type C jaw will go to 52mm but it's not a...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I always try and give an item back to the person who donated the log, so far no one has rejected it and has always resulted in more wood, so win win. I’ve got quite used to the look of sheer delight on my wife’s face when I come in with “another bowl” ;) Thanks for the possible ident, it was...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I was given a small trunk of what I think is Walnut? Unfortunately it had several cracks and rot and after a careless catch destroyed one bowl, I ended up with one tiny bowl....

    Detached garage modernisation/conversion advice

Looking at the picture it appears that no guttering is used on either yours or the neighbouring garage so the gap between the two must get completely saturated when it rains, I'm not surprised there's water coming under the wall. If you use it in it's current state then I would try and at least...

Startrite SD310 planer thicknesser - play in cutting block

Difficult to see but is the cutter block pressed onto the shaft or is it machined in one piece as the video makes it looks like the block is moving on the shaft? I wonder if the block jammed and then the shaft spun inside the block....

    electric/cctv/data cable run question

MDPE is a bit of a pig in cold weather, tends to keep the round coil diameter. I used a few concrete blocks to weight the end down and then unrolled the coil down the trench. To get a tight but smooth bend use a heat gun then bend more than you need, hold for a bit to cool, it will spring back...

    electric/cctv/data cable run question

You can also get MDPE in black which is the normal colour for conduit, I'd also add a caution yellow buried electric tape over the top. MDPE is fairly tough though, it's designed to be buried, I don't believe 40/50mm solvent waste is. It's just over 20mm inside diameter, I easily fitted 3 x cat...

    OSB with acrylic coating?

Wouldn't be my first choice but if you use it for cleats then make the strips reasonable wide, perhaps 80-100mm. I'd also be concerned that the mitred edge point could be weak. This is a job for 3x1 in my view.

    electric/cctv/data cable run question

In this situation conduit is your friend, I'd put 2 or 3 runs down the trench whilst it's dug, crazy not too. 25mm MDPE water pipe is cheap and readily available and one could always be repurposed for water in the future if you fancied an outside tap down there. The beauty of conduit is that you...

    Crown Guard Extraction

Here’s my homemade solution Axminster TS250-2 modifications. I find the advantage of the crown guard not being attached to the riving knife the biggest benefit but it does reduce the amount of dust left on the table.

Rutlands Premium Cryogenic M2 Woodturning tools

I’m not sure what the price difference is but you only buy these once so I would go for the Crown and be assured of the quality.

    Machine transport

I've used a folding engine hoist/crane to lift 200kg into the back of a van, only issue is the ground covering as they don't move on anything rough otherwise a usefull bit of kit.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Decided to make some special Christmas Decorations for my wife. Snowmen were straightforward, turned from Laurel as it's nice and white. The tree is made from the trunk of our first ever Christmas tree, 38 years ago (nah I lied it's a spare bit of 4x2 but had you going for a second :)). The tree...

    Wanted Magswitch magnets

If things do slip with magnets I always use a piece of none slip matting, I either stick it over the whole base if I've recessed the magnets or just under the magnets if they are the only things touching. The thinner the mat the better, I had an off-cut from a company called Dycem which comes on...

    Wanted Magswitch magnets

Steve Maskery uses magnets designed for dredging together with a wooden handle to break the seal, see about 8 mins in. Not as elegant as the mag switches but a lot cheaper....
