    Wet Wood & Coal

The harder and more expensive the local councils make disposing of waste the more likely it is to be burnt in a bonfire. People will normally take the easiest and cheapest route to heat their houses, dispose of waste etc. I’m sure wood burners became popular because wood was cheap and it was...

    Wet Wood & Coal

Well no one in their right mind would burn wet wood. It gives out no heat, clogs your chimney / flue up and blackens the front of the wood burner. As a rural resident I try and buy/ beg/collect recently felled trees/branches, cut split and then season. It’s unclear whether it’s ok to buy a wet...

Suggestions to find a workshop leak

We’ll storm Denis has at least done some good today as my leak was worse than it ever has been so I dug out the foam sealant from the inside and under the threshold. When I fitted the door I stood it on 3 plastic spacers to level it and once it was all fitted I filled the gaps with expanding...

Suggestions to find a workshop leak

Thanks Mike, I thought this and as there were only two small holes drilled for drainage and I wondered if they couldn’t cope so have enlarged the existing drainage holes and drilled a third to make sure the water can get out. I have kept an eye on the water in the channel and any that gets in...

Suggestions to find a workshop leak

Thanks Andy. I specified an aluminium threshold so it’s not bonded to the upvc and I also though that this may be an issue so I have sealed this to the frame. Didn’t make any difference though :o it would be better to have bonded this threshold onto the upvc uprights, indeed the manufacturer...

Suggestions to find a workshop leak

My workshop is a converted double garage. I took out the two up and over doors bricked up a plinth and then filled above with timber frame and insulation. On one side I put inward opening pvcu French doors and I’m getting water leaking in and I can’t work out how it’s getting though. I’ve tried...

    Building a laminate-faced plywood desk

I knew I’d bookmarked a site to calculate shelf loading, may be of some help for a desk too? https://www.woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator/

    Building a laminate-faced plywood desk

I think you’ll need something much more substantial. Just looked at my commercial desk and the front support is steel 40mm x 20mm with an 18mm chipboard veneered top, but that is only 1.8m wide.

Blade width for Axminster 350 bandsaw ?

It all depends on the guides, can you support the blade either side and from the back without any risk of touching the teeth. Contact Ian at Tuffsaws, he said that a 3/16 blade would work on my record power bs300e but would exchange it FoC if I wasn’t happy. It worked fine. You may be able to...

    Worth saving this Ash

Thanks, I’ve painted the ends now and will split them in the next few days. Once I get my lathe I’ll have a play, they might end up in the wood burner anyway

    Worth saving this Ash

I’ve just been given two Ash logs that were cut down late last year for firewood. However, as I hope to start learning turning this year I thought they may be worth keeping? They’re already showing signs of splitting at one end though. Should I just paint the ends and cover them or chainsaw...

Help with my Record Power RPBS8 Bandsaw

If you can take out what’s left and try and work out the size and shape and post a photo/drawing then I’m sure you’ll find a solution here. I have an old Simat 101 lathe that hasn’t been used in a while may be able to turn something for you.....

New Workshop Going Mouldy, Desperately Need Help!

I’ve been caught by this myself. I built a triple garage a few years back under a building note. I had the roof trusses pre made and the roofing company also did the structural calculations for the wooden lintels and frame. However, The building inspector wanted the walls clad in OSB/plywood and...

New Workshop Going Mouldy, Desperately Need Help!

I second Nelsun’s comments, things are always fixable and you can sort this, just take a deep breath and start planning what needs to done. Use the clever people on this forum for ideas and solutions, you have some already. I’m not a structural engineer but you “may” be able to fix the roof by...
