Has anyone ever seen a Startrite drill head elevating mechanism?

I bought a Startrite Mercury that had sat unused in the corner of a local forge for many years. It’s absolutely filthy but is a 10 speed model so doesn’t have the bent shaft issue of the 5 speed versions. The issues it does have are: the table is missing, there is a chip in the motor pulley...

Sabre 350 and 1/4" blades ... can't get guides right

Another trick I use is to remove the side guides and replace with hardwood so that it covers the whole blade including the teeth. With the bandsaw running I move the wood side guide to touch the blade and the teeth cut out a small clearance groove. This gives you a tight fully supported blade...

    Crown tools?

I note that Richard Findley uses their cryo M42 turning gouges, I’d be surprised if a production turner would use anything that was wasn’t fit for purpose even if they were sponsored....

    Cutting bowl blanks, help needed

Thanks for this, How are you mounting the bowl for the final turn? At the moment I’m using a screw Chuck, turn the outside plus a tenon on the base, remounting in the Chuck and then doing the edge and inside. At the moment I have no reverse mounting jaw....

    Calling plastic gurus...

Are you sure it was stuck and not a clip arrangement? Often these sort of things are just snapped together? If you can try a blob of epoxy/glue on each piece and let it go off, then try and remove it, this will give you a good idea how well it sticks to each plastic type.

    Cutting bowl blanks, help needed

Thanks everyone for their comments and confirmation that I’m heading in the right direction. When looking at this I‘m torn between doing the natural quarter sawn approach which gives stable planks versus what will work as a bowl making the most of the grain. I’ll try and take several photos...

    Tailstock issue Record CL2 36

Watch out for the none captive nut inside the tail stock, it’s quite large but sod’s law says it will fall out and lodge some where awkward. If you can use a brass rod when knocking it out. If that doesn’t work you can take the tail stock barrel out and use some heat to crack the joint. good...

    Cutting bowl blanks, help needed

I’ve just been given some elm and I’m looking for advice on how to turn it into bowl blanks. The tree was dead when cut down and wasn‘t sealed after cutting so it may all split and be a waste of time. However, I’m a complete novice at this so going through the process and producing some blanks...

    Flooring weight limits

That's fine then, you only have a 1.3m span, a 2x4 C24 will span 1.9m so you will not have any problems. The span tables are worked on deflection not failure, so even if it was undersize the floor would flex but not fail....

    Flooring weight limits

I can’t answer your question but this may help you work out your loading. Floor joist span tables for surveyors - Floor construction | Right Survey My gut feeling is that it’s a undersized for a normal floor, I would have expected 6x2 or 7x2, to be used on a 2.6m span. However, are the 4x2...

    Low cost dust extraction ducting

I can understand that but that's also the beauty of being retired, you can waste your time on anything you like and still get paid:D

    Low cost dust extraction ducting

I also meant to add that the rigid 100mm Manrose duct used for internal house vents etc, Screwfix £1.30 for 0.35m is a perfect fit on the inside of the 110mm pipe. I used this for my blast gates. You can also stretch the standard 100mm coiled dust pipe over it as well so no need to buy any other...

    Low cost dust extraction ducting

I’ve been wanting to add some fixed dust extraction to the workshop for ages and have been saving off-cuts of 110mm soil pipe as this seems to be a robust and cheap solution. I also decided to make all the tee joints and bends too, which turned out to be really easy. Here are the finished...

    Heating the workshop

Either you’ve been lucky or I have been very unlucky. I have 2 oil radiators, both dimplex models though, and they take 30 minutes to even get luke warm. I have now gone down the quartz wall heater route. MH-10-1 Wall-Mounted Quartz Heater 600 / 1200W I have placed these where I tend to stand...

    Peg Boards v French Cleats

I’ve tried a few options and have now finalised on a cleat system. My workshop layout has changed as new machinery arrives or I think of a better layout. Sometimes I start working at a different end of the bench simply because of space or close to a piece of machinery. I find being being able to...

    Cheap laser engravers

I’d be very cautious if you do try one or any similar versions. Buy a decent pair of laser specs before you event think about turning it on. Your eyes are incredible sensitive to laser light, even reflected. I suspect none of these have tested....

    Record Lathe Banjo Question

👏👏 Excellent upgrades, you’ve addressed the few points that I’m already wishing the lathe had! I’ve also found oil spraying up the back wall! Do you have any more details on how you made them as I would love to try and copy? I presume the spindle wheel screws into the end of the shaft where...
