    Boxes galore

Either but the box would be most interesting to me.

Startrite Mercury 2 10 speed restoration

Well, I’m trying hard now to be more environmentally aware and not binning stuff just because it’s the cheap and easy thing to do. If the bearings are ok then I’d like to reuse them if at all possible but if there’s no way of assessing I guess I’ll have no option.

How about doing a step by step for those of us who are new to turning and aspire to be able to do something like this?

    Workshop security

I’ve used the Honeywell doorbell system. I‘ve one sounder in the house and one in the workshop. They repeat the signals so range is not an issue. You can then add door/window sensors and a motion detector. I’ve added one to the front gate (in a waterproof box), driveway gate, workshop door. Now...

    Live Centres - Theo Haralampou

I didn’t see the demo but I have used a threaded live centre when turning metal. That would allow you to turn a wooden cup and then mount onto the threaded centre to then friction hold the sphere? Can you extract a snapshot from the video?

Startrite Mercury 2 10 speed restoration

I have now stripped everything down, removed all the bearings, and found no more obvious issues which is good news. I will now degrease each part and carefully check before reassembly. The first item was the base, pole and frame/casting. I like machines to look old so wherever possible try and...

J-G that’s amazing, thank you. Yes, I can bore them out to size. PM on the way.

    Mobile base

Thanks, I wondered if you had come up with a removal foot. I’ve used coach bolts in the past but never really found a good solution for the top. I’ve tried locknuts but they always seem to come undone. I did file a 1/4 hex on the top so I could use a electric drill but it was a pain to file...

What do you use on the bottom of the jacks as feet?

    Outdoor Oak Finishing, or not...

Wow, that’s more like a 5 star bee resort than a hotel, she will be delighted with that.

    Outdoor Oak Finishing, or not...

I would leave it unfinished, I’ve never managed to treat oak regularly enough to stop it going black under the finish although that may say more about me. I would put a covering on the roof though, bit of slate, off cut of EDM, zinc sheet? On some bird boxes I collected some aluminium beer...

Startrite Mercury 2 10 speed restoration

Yes, but the damage was probably caused by someone changing gear when the drill was running. The tufnol gears have saved the rest of the gearbox. Metal gears would work but if I absentmindedly did the same then... Thanks J-G, you know my toolbox better than I do!! I measured the mills and...

Startrite Mercury 2 10 speed restoration

For info HPC gears quoted £70 for each planet gear each in 1/2inch Tufnol. I‘m chasing up a few final options before going to machine spares. First, there‘s rumours of a local model engineer who has gear making facilities. Secondly, finding someone with a small CNC mill/engraver at home. I...

Workshop Heater - Request for information.

I can’t comment but I’m quite amazed you can burn 12 litres of diesel and not be concerned about exhaust fumes in a closed space.

Workshop Heater - Request for information.

My experience of paraffin heaters is that they generate a fair bit of moisture when run so only work in a very well ventilated space.

    Problem with new Mitre Saw

There was an issue where the Makita LS1019 did this and I think it was because the guide rails weren’t exactly parallel to each other.

    Cutting bowl blanks, help needed

Thanks, yes, that’s the one I bought and it does have a section on preparing new wood and rough turning which I’m now reading. Makes we wonder whether the forum should have a new section on books and reviews?

Startrite Mercury 2 10 speed restoration

Thanks J-G. I have now pressed out the centre bush, which I could almost do with my fingers. It’s split marked with 06 AGS 08? The gear is 1/2“ thick and the bore is probably 15/32? The bush is 20 thou out of round if you measure several points.

Following on this is the site I was pointed towards for 3d printing of mechanical parts. Energy Chains, polymer bearings, flexible cable, & linear slides They have an online cad tool for gears, but only for metric. However, just as a try, I worked out the Mod as if it was a metric gear and put...
