How to improve the look of this small mug table

Thanks everyone for the feedback, some ideas to try, I tend to go in the workshop for a couple of hours to get out of the mid day sun, so progress isn’t quick. I think the pub stool is a great description, I new it reminded me of something. I‘ll try a making a thinner leg out of pine and see...

    Garage Doors (insulated)

I’m no expert but I’ve never had much luck with plywood externally, probably because I don’t keep on top of the painting. The thought of grooving through the lamination would seem to increase the chance of water getting in? When I’ve made doors like this I’ve always made a traditional tenon...

How to improve the look of this small mug table

My MIL wanted a small table for hubby to put his mug on so I thought it would make a good turning exercise for me. They have ercol furniture so copied the simple 2 taper style leg and turned a small top which I then bored 3 angled holes in for the leg tenons. This is the first turned project I...

Safe to use a blade half the size on the table saw? 6mm 150mm dia grooving blade

I use that blade on my TS which normally takes a 250mm blade with no issues. Make a zero clearance plate. The peripheral speed is lower but just take slow steady cuts. With a sled I have a 25mm cutting depth which is fine for my usage, your saw may be different. I’d buy the 180mm blade if buying...

    Home battery storage systems...

It's almost impossible to go off grid in the UK using only Solar panels as they produce so little energy in the winter when you most want the power. To give you an idea in July a 10kW (28-30 panels) Solar array in Edinburgh generates 1225kWh, in December 167kWh. Our house uses about 13kWh per...

    Home battery storage systems...

I have 8kW of solar panels and a 13.5kW Tesla power wall on order, there’s a shortage so probably won’t be installed until Sep/Oct. I spent some time doing a spreadsheet to calculate the cost/benefit before making a decision. One huge benefit of the Tesla battery over the others is the special...

Dust collection - single or twin motor.

I have the DX4000 and I use the twin motors a lot, a single motor will do the job but the second motor is really useful for the planer thicknesser and the table saw. I’ve even used the both motors on the mitre saw when cutting MDF as it just catches a bit more bust. I haven’t found emptying...

    Does a shelf have…

I would be with marcros, buying sheets or cut sheets is always length x width x thickness as it could be used for any purpose, but once it has a target location then it’s width, depth and thickness…..

    Does a shelf have…

Following a confusing phone call with someone working at my Mother-in-Laws who is putting up some shelves I wondered is there a standard way of describing a shelf size? Does it have: A width and a depth. OR A length and a width I tend to use width and depth as you stand in front of a shelf...

Startrite Mercury 2 10 speed restoration

I have finally managed to start on this project again and assembling the quill bearings. These were all an easy push fit. The bearings in the reduction gearbox needed a bit of thought in the pressing order but again went in fairly easily, unfortunately I forgot to take any pictures! I then...

Help with which vacuum to buy please?

I have the DX4000 and it is noisy so mine lives in a sound proof cabinet, see another thread for details. I run it in a 110mm ducted system and it copes fine with a Metabo planer thicknesser (but does fill up rather quickly) plus table saw, bandsaw, mitre saw, sanding etc. Its not suitable for a...

Does it have to be solid oak, could you use a quality veneered panel?

Anyone experienced with extra large workshop builds in a UK garden?

You need to find a farm with a suitable barn or a large barn with a smaller house/piggery/stable that you convert into a house. Alternatively you may be able to find a property that backs onto an industrial estate.

    Spring time power washing

I’ve been advised by different suppliers over the years never to pressure wash paving. The reason, is that the jet cleans right to the bottom of any fissures and pits in the surface and the wear can make them deeper meaning there’s more for the dirt and algae to lodge in. The more you pressure...

Saw comparison, bosch 8sjl vs bosch 800 sj

The LS1019 is the saw I would buy now, if fact I may well sell my Bosch at some point and buy the Makita instead, the extra cutting depth would be useful.

Firm Fixings in a Plasterboard Wall?

Geefix are the strongest fixings I have found for plasterboard but I wouldn’t use them on a handrail, Ozi‘s answer is the way to go. It sounds awful but doesn’t take that long and with a quick dry plaster you can do it in a few hours. .

    oak or softwood sleepers

I bought some new half oak sleepers (200 x 50) to make some raised beds. After 10 years they have started to fall apart, not much rot but they have cracked and then split. I should have lined the beds with some plastic sheet but assumed, wrongly, that the oak would last 15 to 20 years in contact...

    Record power CL5 12x15 lathe

If that’s an Axminster chuck then I would be interested in the reverse mounted jaws if you decide to advertise them separately, I’ll keep an eye out in the for sale section.

    Record power CL5 12x15 lathe

From what I can see from the pictures it looks almost identical to my CL3 x 36, the tail stock looks improved and I’m guessing with the size of the headstock that it only has 3 speeds? If that’s the case then possibly pitch at a slightly lower price than one of those.

Unequal bevel on Sorby Bowl gouge

Now you have the perfect grind use this to “calibrate“ your jig. You have a couple of adjustments so see if you can get close without the grinder running. Pull out the bottom slide and then extend/withdraw the gouge in the holder to match the tip angle and then see how the wings are. If it‘s...
