    New bandsaw...decision made

I have the 300e which doesn’t have the quick release tensioning lever, mores the pity. I originally wanted a RP BS350 but the 300e came up used so I bought it as a stop gap until I found a decent used 350, but still haven’t got round to changing. Probably go for a Sabre 350 now but the prices...

Workshop french cleat fixing query - and hi from new member!

No I wouldn’t be happy with 12mm ply either, I tend to use PSE rather than plywood as well. Hadn’t thought about pulling out the fixings, I’ve gone for 45 degree as I’ve found it’s less likely to move or get knocked off, especially on smaller lighter tools. Not had any problems with fixings so...

    New bandsaw...decision made

In my parlance the top knob is the tensioning control, the knob on the back is the blade alignment control? So my mod helps the tensioning control on the top, haven’t had a problem with my alignment knob at the back but then I did put high pressure grease on all threads when I did the top mod...

    New bandsaw...decision made

I only do this if I have a wide blade fitted and the tension is at it’s max, otherwise I leave as is. I’ve forgotten that I’ve un-tensioned a blade a couple if times and the resulting hassle seemed to outweigh any potential benefits….

    New bandsaw...decision made

The thrust bearing goes between the frame and adjuster. You can see the edge in the photo showing the 3 parts; bearing lower surface, bearing, bearing upper surface. This means that the only turning resistance is the threads which I use a high pressure grease on. The other key is to loosen the...

    New bandsaw...decision made

I put a roller thrust bearing on mine, transformed the tensioning for less that £3 and took 15 minutes to fit. Why record didn’t fit one from new….

    Makita lxt

I’ve got the 458, which I think the brushed predecessor of the the 481. Great drill, I’ve used it with a 125mm core drill through a 9 inch brick wall without issue. Whatever one you get make sure it has a metal gearbox if you want indestructibility.

Planing to make my own table saw out of a circular one... what would make a good circular saw to use?

I would reiterate many of the previous comments especially if you’re going to have to buy a circular saw to start with. However, I used a triton work centre for years which gave great service and may be worth a look at, if nothing else to see how they solved issues of crown guard, remote safety...

SIP 16 inch Pro Bandsaw blade help

You could try Ian at Tuffsaws he’ll recommend what he thinks is the smallest blade from experience but give you the option to exchange if it doesn’t work for you, can’t say fairer that that. The minimum blade width is mainly influenced by the guides, can the rear guide be brought close to the...

My eyebrows raised when I initially saw the dogging title.

    Sorby Pro-Edge

Plus I love the fact that once the gouge has lost its perfect profile (this is becoming less of an issue as my skill has improve) you can flip it over flute side down, grind it flat and then use the jig to recreate a perfect fingernail again in less than a minute.

    Sorby Pro-Edge

It‘s funny the only advise Sorby did give me was not to slide the tool from side to side whilst grinding but to grind, lift and then move to evenly wear the belt. Some of that wear was probably down to user error when I first purchased and effectively re-profiled all my turning tools and several...

    Sorby Pro-Edge

I would agree with that. I had a couple of hours free this morning before heading out so I went back and rechecked my proedge. At 90 degrees I found the slot was 0.2mm closer on the left than right to the back plate. This could be fixed my loosening the mounting bolts and realignment. I put a...

I also find taking the belt guard off/on a bit of a pain but luckily do’t have to do this so often. I’ve been tempted to cut off the table nib on the rhs as I never seem to use it but I know as soon as I do I’ll realise why it’s there. I’ve also been tempted to slot the guard so it can be taken...

    Sorby Pro-Edge

I‘m not quite sure here, what bit are we checking for square? The PESQW compensates for the red distance not being the same. But the table could also be sloping so that it’s not square to the plateau as shown in blue (as if you were looking straight on) or are we talking about something else?

Post a photo of the last thing you made

And I’ve just noticed that one of the boxes is not oak, no idea what it is though?

    Sorby Pro-Edge

I also have the ProEdge and I’ve never managed to get a decent flat grind for chisels or plane blades but for turning tools it’s brilliant. Sorby support was next to useless, pointing to user error which it may well be but I had hoped for more help. See my post on the Sorby support forums...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Made from some oak branches that I saved from the fire wood basket. Noticed they had some spalting and wanted to use this and the centre of the wood for effect. No idea how long they’ll last… Did the small boxes first and then thought they’d make nice mushrooms. All different thicknesses to see...

    ant nest eradication

Mmm, seems that Borax was banned as it was used for cleaning but boric acid wasn’t as it was used as a pesticide, smells of an EU law to me
