    Metalworking lathe buying advice

If you have the space and means to move, larger lathes are often significantly cheaper than the smaller “model making“ size lathes. There’s a Colchester Bantam on Gumtree for £900 but it’s down in Bedford….

    Turning oval knobs/handles

Sound like you’re right, they used it as a selling point in the their 1985 brochure. No less than 15 separate operations!

    Turning oval knobs/handles

Thanks for the ideas, I‘d convinced myself that I was missing a way of doing this but obviously not. Just need to find an Elm offcut, I’ve got this horrible feeling that I turned the last piece I had into a bowl….

    Turning oval knobs/handles

I want to make a couple of replacement knobs for an Ercol dresser we have. Trouble is they’re oval in shape. So my initial thoughts was to turn between centres and then offset but having drawn it up I don’t think that’s going to work. I know you can get fancy ellipse chucks or indeed make...

Philips Shavers - First class repair and service dept.

I bought my Philishave in 2013 and have used it every day until last week when I managed to drop it, typically it landed cutter end down on the edge of the loo followed by the floor. Afterwards it still ran but made a horrible squealing sound. On trying to find some spares they seem to be either...

Breadboard rescue - bead or fill?

I would fill with a contrasting resin or milliput black although you may need to widen the groove to make it look like a feature rather than filling a crack…

Triton AJA 150 for MK3 workcentre?

I had a mk3 which I sold a few years back. To use a router there was a different table top, a new fence and the item you show to clamp the router in. I know you hate ebay but search for Triton Workcentre and someone is selling a mk3 with all the necessary parts so at least you can see what you need.

Seasoning wood in a breathable membrane or environmesh tent?

I use various improvised covers, tarp, spare piece of conservatory roofing, corrugated iron sheet, under the oil tank! Perhaps I should invest a bit of time and make something more permanent? Our firewood which I dry from a small coppice always gets totally infested despite being in a proper log...

Seasoning wood in a breathable membrane or environmesh tent?

Most of the wood I’ve tried to season for turning always seems to get infested with beetle or wood worm. I’ve now started to remove the bark in the hope this will make the wood less attractive to the the little buggers. My wife uses something called environmesh which is a very fine net which she...

Project ideas for old oak planks

It would be nice to use as is to make the most of the patina, even reusing the nail holes if possible. so yes, table top with suitable frame underneath to line up where the joists originally went so you can reuse the nail holes, ledge door, rustic picture/mirror frame, small bookcase, may have...

    Famag Forstner sets

    DandM tools has the bore max 2 6 piece set (12, 13, 16, 18, 20, 22) at 84.95 and 5 piece (15, 20, 25, 30, 35) at 79.95. Not a bad price.

    Mortaring, but upside down?!

Definitely need a picture, wide mortar between wood and masonary is generally avoided, the wood moves during the year and then a crack develops and then the mortar falls out. Can you not trim with some wood or fibre board?

    Another timber ID...

I‘m no expert at all but that last photo of the planed wood looks like Meranti (Shorea or one of its many variants). Certainly seen it used for pallets.

Record Power BS350S Bandsaw Modifications - Part 1: Blade Guide Upgrade Using Rikon Tool-Less Kit

If they were going to do this they’d have done it by now. I suspect the cost of packaging the bits up together with a failsafe set of instructions together with the number of supports calls and quantity they’d sell probably just doesn’t stack up. Plus they’d really like you to buy a Sabre, I...

How deep can you go...And How ?

I’m a new turner and struggle with the same issue. What helped me was stopping the lathe, getting a decent light and then manually pushing the gouge down the side and then round the bottom watching exactly how the bevel was rubbing on the wood. I discovered that I couldn’t maintain the 45 degree...

    Yet another wood identification

Thanks everyone for their thoughts, obviously not a straightforward one. I’ll cut and plane a piece up to see if that gives any more clues. The purple seems to be fading already…..

    Yet another wood identification

I had a load of wood dropped off by a local landscape gardener which he‘s just removed from a garden. Some Cherry but also another wood that appears to be purple inside when cut, both trees were removed due to rot which is a shame as the purple wood trunk would have otherwise been a decent size...

    Compressor tyre inflators

So the PCL adapter arrived today, works a treat. The part that locks onto the thread is about 5 threads wide so locks on really firmly. The adapter is also a good fit onto the valve stem and seals without any effort. The only downside is the crimp is not as neat as the barrel type crimp...

    How old is this roof?

Yup, looks like they’ve laid them as if they were standard interlocking roof tiles but they appear to be more like slates which need that extra course. If that’s the case the whole roof needs to be done…and some matching tiles found.
