    Contraction rules

When a pattern maker makes a mould for casting in metals, he makes it bigger by a specified amount, which is determined by the type of metal, to allow for it shrinking in size as it cools. The appropriate contraction rule is used during the making. Cheers Andy

    Stuck plane blade

Assuming that at the mechanical fixings have been slacked off adequately I'd be looking at it being held by rust or wood resins. Have you turned this particular blade over previously? If so, maybe the blade had a residue which has compressed and stuck hard? If you can stop the cutter head...

    Stuck plane blade

Do you know it slides sideways? A tentative tap here and there may break a seal due to pressure. Cheers Andy

    Record vice slipping.

Don't think I've never know one of these have anything protrude past the bottom line of the casting. Turning that guide over would be my first option. Cheers Andy

Fretworking & the Hobbies & Handicrafts Companies New video

Very informative Scrimper, I didn't know about the treadle conversion kit for the handcranked model. Yes, it is a bit tricky to saw with, particularly when curves are involved (when aren't they?) Cheers Andy

    Multitool

Yes, but I'm going left n right with the side's of the cutter and for me the freshly squared edges attack the putty better, until it wears again. This was especially useful when I had to clean off over a 100 years of solid over puttying and paint on the inside of this caked up fanlight. I hold...

    Multitool

I'm on the 18v Makita and it's a bit of a noise but ear defenders solve that for me. One of the remarkable things I've found it invaluable for is removing glazing units and in a similar vein the removal of rock hard putty especially if the glass needs to stay in and cannot be heated. The putty...

    Record 52 1/2 vice modification

Thanks RECORD or whoever owns em now, you've taken the undisputed world market leader in quick release carpentry bench vices and wrecked it by penny pinching.(n):cry: I dare say you aren't the first to suffer this problem and won't be the last. Just in case there is any modicum of customer...

    Record 52 vice

Have a look at the state of the thread at the furthest (least used) end and compare with the rest. It is not uncommon to find that the wear has reduced the "hook" of the thread to a near vertical shape along with the possibility of the half nut doing the same. The design of this "hook" shape...

    Axe

Following on from this and after reading a section in The Wood Wright's Companion by Roy Underhill, I got to thinking, could there be a way of making an axe head hold even tighter on the helve for longer. Basically he says "if a head of any sort is coming loose don't do the old trick of dunking...
