    Curved door frame

The key is in the setting out, as with all joinery but ever more so with arches. It helps if you can use CAD software but nowhere near essential. Yes it does cost more, This single job tips over 4k (inc VAT). Made, painted and installed that is.... and we've still gone over the allocated time...

    Curved door frame

Yes I understand what your saying. I did glue up the “blockwork” before routering the curves out.. The reason I made the two curved pieces separately is that I could use a standard 1/2” worktop cutter. It meant I didn’t have to plunge so deep (90mm!) I had already prepped my domino...

    Curved door frame

I’ve only made a few curved door frames and usually try a different method each time until I find a satisfactory solution. Well, think I’ve now found my favourite method.... Make, mitre & glue 2 stock pieces, 45mm thick with plenty of width to achieve the curve. Make 18mm curved template and...

    Workshop layout

Think about the order in which you will process timber and have machines in that order. Imagine a typical job progressing round the workshop. You don’t want to be going from one end to another all the time. A central bench on wheels works well. A finishing area seperate from an assembly area is...

Advice needed - making shaker kitchen cabinets

Why make the doors like that? You have everything you need to make shaker doors properly. Basically just need a router cutter, track saw and that’s it. Biscuit join the cabinet with pocket screws (although personally I’d just straight screw them normally and fit a softwood plug if they were...

    B&Q selling birch plywood!

I’ve had some plywood from b&q that was absolutely great quality in the past. Think it just depends what batch they get delivered. £20 though - can’t complain at that! Louis

    What are my clamping options...

Why don’t you re work the rails that run through. I presume your currently trying to glue to lengthways (to the rad). But surely if the top and bottom rails of the panel ran end to end, then that changes the orientation of your clamps. Ie - height wise. So you clamps would then suffice? Louis

    Glazing with Butyl

Interesting that the tubed stuff is sticky. Sounds like you couldn’t do an instant clean up after which is the main benefit IMO. I don’t believe butyl is only for single glazing. We follow the hodgeson instructions. We bed the glass in with butyl, fill the void around the glass with low mod...

    Glazing with Butyl

I tried the tape and didn’t really get along with it. Couldn’t get it to stick very well. But it was still very cold. Difficult to bed onto as it’s already pretty flat.

    Glazing with Butyl

Guys - I’ve just started glazing all our windows now with butyl66 from hodgesons. Much prefer it over low mod silicone due to its ability to be instantly cleaned. Question - is there a tool for application anywhere? Like a butyl gun or something. We are using 10kg tubs and applying it by hand...

Ridiculous things you believed as a child...

I used to believe that “toon holes” were real for ages. A black circle you stick to the wall and then jump through. I think I asked for one for about 3 Christmas’ in a row!

    Bringing goods from the EU

Just one example - in November casement stays were £2.86 + Vat. Today they are £4.69 and only one example. We are only a small business & we spend nearly a grand a month with Reddiseals, Price increase for that company alone would be the equivalent of buying a new business van. It’s not to be...
