When a customer goes against your advice.....

This is also true- but which?? Douglas Fir is shockingly bad now, the quality of oak is becoming lower as the cost goes up. Sapele is great But is just so dusty to machine! Southern yellow pine it is!

When a customer goes against your advice.....

I still have my doubts about accoya. I made my own windows with Accoya and your correct, they haven’t budged. But using SS screws was damn annoying. I’m so paranoid every time I’ve used it. Even when it comes to painting as I’ve heard so many horror stories. Plus it clogs the machines like no...

When a customer goes against your advice.....

Thanks for the opinions. I have sent the quotation - using woodex red grandis. Should do the job. Maybe accoya is a better option though. The red grandis was £500! Blimey it’s shot up! I have no issue with the actual making. People want what they want and who am I to say no. But if they...

When a customer goes against your advice.....

I’m currently pricing up a set of internal french doors. The opening space is 2080 x 2600. Against my advice, the are insisting that they want the whole space taken up by two doors, both measuring approx 1m wide x 2.6 high x 45mm. It’s essentially a PAT 10 door and the component sizes are to be...

Best joinery technique for making box shelf from oak worktop

Glue and screw would be fine but that thing is going to weigh a tonne! You need to think of a suitable long term way this thing is going to float under the cabinets. I wouldn’t have it fixed to the cabinet underside that’s for sure... Better to use L brackets and fix to the (masonry) wall. Can...

External door panels - Medite Accoya ?

Surely the panels are not just dropped in. I suspected the panels have been rebated around the edge and then sit within the groove, like fielded panels. “Mediate accoya”? What’s that? I thought there was accoya OR mediate Tricoya.

How can I fix a twisted door?

Never had an issue with Lathams when swapping timber. There customer service is frankly some of the best I’ve ever come across from any company timber or not.

How can I fix a twisted door?

See it all the time.... people try to bridge a small gap and it just twists the door more and more over time. No going back now. Either replace the door or deepen the rebate at the lower half (scribe the door in basically) Personally I would replace the door every time.

How can I fix a twisted door?

Question to OP - have you ran some of that retro fit, adhesive draught sealing around the frame? Most common cause IME

Why Can't Someone Build Me a Door?

Oh I don’t know about that...I have absolutely no issue making a bare frame for someone. In fact, there’s probably more profit to make it without supplying and fitting the glass.... Also, by the time I’m ready to measure, order and install the glass, my mind has usually moved on to starting the...

Why Can't Someone Build Me a Door?

In all fairness I think it sounds very reasonable. I couldn’t justify charging any more, only the fact it’s +VAT I normally give 8-12 week lead time as standard though EDIT: thinking about it earlier today..... £800 + vat. Deffo £800 + vat (hammer)

    Georgian Bars

Morso guillotine and bandsaw are two essentials my shop doesn’t have. I saw a setup for sale at w18 this year. It involved the guillotine for the mitred cuts and to achieve the gouge for the half lap joint they had a router on a laterally moving sliding arm. Bit like how a chop saw slides back...

Pin for hook and band hinges

Does anyone know where I can purchase just the pin for a hook and band style hinge. I need 2@ 15mm diameter and 1 @ 12mm. They need to be the type that get pointed into the mortar. Made a set of gates with the intention of not removing the existing pins but alas. I cocked up the position of...

    Droopy dominoes!

When adjusting the height I always have the rest flipped up (as it comes out of the box) and try to raise and lower equally. But what is of the most paramount importance is that you have sharp cutters! Blunt cutters will send everything skew!!

    Georgian Bars

The issue with this though is that they need to be scribed first. How do you scribe them after they have already been moulded? They will simply break and spelch out. Also the double sided Georgian bar tape needs to sit on a perfectly flat surface. Very difficult if it’s riddled with saw marks...
