    Finishing walnut

Yep, pretty fool proof and gives a superb finish. Apply thinly though using a good quality brush or white rag. It does form a skin inside the can after a while but that's easy enough to cut away with knife of some sort. I also dilute the stuff a little with a dash of white spirit as it's a bit...

End grain gluing. We all know how weak that is, don't we....

Some years ago I was nattering to Rob Ingham no less who surprised me by saying that end grain gluing with modern adhesives can be quite strong. I certainly wasn't going to argue with him  - Rob

    Reapplying stropping paste

While we're all talking stropy :D , I saw a UToob clip a while back from the US where the presenter mentioned that if your last honing medium is finer that the strop medium then stropping is a counter productive process, which to me at the time seemed to make sense. I use a 1 micron SS 3M film...

    Reapplying stropping paste

Yep, that sounds about right but I rub a finger full of Vaseline into the leather as well as the stropping compound (green Veritas bar). Just helps to make the stropping a little smoother - Rob

    Woodworking in limited spaces.

Just to digress a tad, I keep on seeing references to the double iron as a way of planing without the wood tearing. I seem to get reasonable results (or at least am happy with) with my suite of Veritas LA planes, where the smoother has a very tight mouth and an effective pitch on the cutter of...

Premium hand tools - prices slashed

Matthew Platt at Workshop Heaven is currently selling a selection of Holtey (pronounced Holtie) planes which for me are far more desirable than those Bridge City offerings, regardless of where they're run up. I just wonder though, how much of that price for a Holtey is profit? - Rob

Hermes adhesive film vs 3M lapping films

Exactly the same here; I've used loads of different sharpening systems and the one you and I use is IMHO the best by a couple of light years - Rob

    Diagnosing sharpening problems

That's what I would do do, but you don't need to grind right back to the edge. If you have a read through the following blurb that I penned some years ago: https://knowledge.axminstertools.com/th ... -red-line/ ...a red felt tip pen will allow you to get incredibly close to the edge without...

    Your most used tools

My most used tools are the ones that are directly in front of me on the 'Tool Wall', so rules, marking gauges, squares and knives, closely followed by the Veritas LA jack and try plane under the bench - Rob

    Woodworking in limited spaces.

Same here. If there's more than half a bucket of shavings on the floor at any time they get hoovered up into the cyclone bin- Rob

    Woodworking in limited spaces.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the book you want to get hold of and read thoroughly is Vic Tesolin's (he's the Veritas bloke) 'The Minimalist Woodworker' - Rob https://www.amazon.co.uk/Minimalist-Woo ... 1940611350

Do you take care over the invisible bits?

On anything I make, the back and bits that can't bee seen are as important as all show faces. Even if I left the undersides rough, I know they're rough and that would irritate  It's a revelation to go round the most recently opened furniture gallery at the V&A (right at the top of...

Ruobo style bench in Teak I think, What finish?

Agreed, teak is THE most expensive commercial hardwood. Great stuff to use, but difficult to glue and and awful as regards retaining an edge on a plane. If you decide to do anything in teak, you'll need to hone your plane iron(s) pretty frequently; apart from that, it's almost as good as English...

    Argyl Chair (Charles Rennie Mackintosh)

Absolutely, bang spot on 100% correct! I've never failed to be impressed when I walk into a superb Japanese room fitted out with tatami mats, sliding shoji doors, a tokonama and a view over an immaculate garden. Gob smacked is only close - Rob

    Argyl Chair (Charles Rennie Mackintosh)

None of those CRM/FLW style of chairs and especially those 'things' that Mike takes a fancy to, remotely tick any boxes. This on the other hand, ticks them all 8) - Rob

    Walnut tool chest

Nice job; I do like the positioning of the oval pattern on the front of the box. It was worth saving that lump just for this job - Rob

    Dowelmax UK

I have and use frequently the full set of Dowlmax jigs; it's an utterly brilliant bit of kit and superbly accurate. If you can get hold of one, go for it! - Rob

A birch shall have to be felled

If you've got a lathe, same some of the bigger bits for turning; birch is great to turn - Rob

    Dust Extraction Grounding/Earthing??

I know it's desirable that you should earth the dx system, but I've never bothered with mine and it's been fine for donkey's years; not even a tiny tingle - Rob

    Specialist Planes

First up is a Record 0114 Compass plane. This is pretty old but is in absolute tip top condition; I bought it many years ago from Martin King (late of this forum) and I have never, ever used it, so it's time for it to find a new home. One of the problems with this type of compass plane is...
