    Spindex

A 'heads up' really for you chaps with stuff that need sharpening. Last year this firm collected a set of planer blades from Salisbury for re-sharpening and then dropped them off at my home the following week...a first class collection and delivery service. They're based in Havant and...

Moxxon Style Vice - reduced to £80 (collection from Yandles)

I made this a few years ago, using a couple of Ax Universal Vice Screws, so it's not strictly a true Moxxon with the spinning handwheels, but it does offer an immense grip on anything between the jaws. Constructed using thick, quarter sawn Euro Oak, max width between spindles is 310mm...

    How square is your square

Just to throw a spanner in the works  and from the Ax website page; 'All Axminster Precision Engineer's squares conform to DIN875/II, guaranteed square and straight.' - Rob

    Bog oak treasure trove.

I have a reasonable quantity of top grade (and yes, it's very expensive) quarter sawn Bog Oak and Mike is right; it doesn't come in very wide widths and can have a quite a few defects. Ideal for a small coffee table, but if you're thinking about prime grade timber for say, a dining room table...

Axminster Leather Apron - now £35 inc P&P SOLD

An earlier version of this one which is being sold as I find it too heavy for woodwork; see the comments from Geoffrey Laycock on the current offering. This apron has seen some use, but not a lot; it has an internal chest pocket with leather straps. It's a few years old now and I can't...

    Lie Neilsen 97 1/2

Tom, yes you could use a wide skew chisel (if such things exist) and it would work, but to gain the most control, you'd always have to reference it off the surface of the rail. Using the chisel plane means that you create a series of parallel 'flats' which gradually drop until the plane's sole...

    Lie Neilsen 97 1/2

Yep, it is a bit of faff, but it's not a difficult 'faff' once you get your head round how the tool works. Gradually lowering the sole of the plane via thin bits of printer paper was a bit of 'light bulb' moment, but this technique makes it much more manageable - Rob

    Lie Neilsen 97 1/2

The current small project in the 'shop is a bedside table (here very roughly assembled) made from an assortment of odds n'ends of gash oak (really just to use up all the offcuts) with blocks added to the inside of the stand; One task is to level the inside face of the blocks after the profile...

    where to buy decent hardwood

You need to be a bit careful though; that woodshed is very dark and there's a lot of stuff in there, but yes, if you're lucky, you can pick up a few gems - Rob

    Finishing ash staked chair

No finishing expert here, but I don't think so. You've actually got to use something to fill up the pores; hence my suggestion of several thin coats of quick drying, dead flat acrylic polish, after which I'd use some wax to give a hint of a shine - Rob

    Finishing ash staked chair

I wonder whether several coats of a quick drying, dead flat acrylic wax finish might solve the problem of filling the pores? This is one of the issues that I'm pondering at the moment regarding some Olive Ash recently purchased. The satin variety is too shiny for me, but I'm tempted to try the...

    Inghamish Box

Following Harbo's recent foray into Robert Ingham style 'lollypop' boxes herewith my attempt at one of his twin lid designs, shortly to be despatched to London as my son's birthday present. This box though has got a little bit of JK in there... ...'cos it has the 'lift' as part of each...

Yep, there's one for sale on the forum. No connection with the seller btw - Rob

How do you store your hand planes?

I have a lot more than three and none have any sign of rust, but then my 'shop, like Mike's is insulated, warm and dry - Rob

    Korean Chest of Drawers

Gary, the centre muntin is glued in place on the front with a small 4mm ply wafer which runs in a groove machined into the inside face. This allows a bit of 'slidability' so that it can be positioned squarely and accurately in the centre. The back of the muntin is screwed to the underside of...

    Korean Chest of Drawers

Thanks Gary. For a full account of how to make these drawers, see Rob Ingham's 'Cutting Edge Cabinetmaking', now sadly out of print but well worth it if you can lay hands on a copy. In essence, you make a standard drawer box from say 7 or 8mm qs oak. In the centre of the box, there's a muntin...
