    Blanket chest completed

Nice job: I finished one recently and used three 65mm brass butts to hinge it. Once the hinges have been fitted in the chest, the difficult bit is then holding the lid vertical in the right position to mark out the position of the leaves on the underside. There is an easy way though......- Rob

    Chisels

As stated below, I have no affiliation of any sort with Axminster, but the 'Rider' chisels are one of the best (IMO) hand tool products they make. They're made by Narex but have a much better handle which is made from hornbeam and lightly oiled; the original Narex handle(s) is a nasty, clunky...

    Honing Guide

I've tried a few and all have their plus and minus points. The original Eclipse is quite good, but taken to it's ultimate form in the LN version which is fine for LN stuff and similar, but useless for Japanese chisels. I also used for many years the Richard Kell guides from WH which again are...

    Axminster discount

The company have always given student discounts, but a) you'll need to prove you're a student and b) you'll have to ask for it - Rob

Help ordering from tuffsaws to Portugal

Yep, and almost anywhere else in Europe - Rob

    Alternative to Titebond

That's an easy one: Everbuild D4. Easily as good as TB3, fully waterproof (not for constant marine immersion) easy to clean up and best of all....it's cheap. I can buy a litre in town for less than a fiver - Rob

Smallish block plane for female hands?

Agreed; I have one and it's a little beauty. You can reduce the mouth by shimming the bed with a very thin bit of card stuck in with d/s tape; works a treat - Rob

    Silverline 900mm F-clamps £8.80 at Birco

Same here, won't go near them with a 15' barge pole (or similar) - Rob

    Charging for furniture

Sounds about right Aidan  If I make for anybody else (which I seldom ever do) it's done as a favour or at the specific request of SWIMBO so I usually say that there are a couple of things I charge for a) consumables (wood, router cutters, screws etc) and b) transport if required (or...

    Pocket hole screw question

Axminster have that size in stock. I use their screws with no issues whenever I do the very odd bit of pocket hole joinery - Rob

    Experiences/ideas please - Cable-less house vac cleaners

We've had Dyson V10 for a few years and it's SWIMBO's favourite toy. The battery packed up a while ago so we looked online at Amazon etc. Turns out the cheapest place to get a pukka battery is Dyson itself, who had all our details on their 'puter and when ordering she also had a pleasant...

Very generous present ( not woodwork )

I'd agree, they are a bit hard on the 'sit bones' in your backside but once you've given the underside few applications of their special gloopy wax and done a fair few miles they do get much more comfortable. I went for the black leather jobbie with the copper rivets. I've had this bike...

Quality front door hinge and hardware advice

Yep, I generally use these guys for brass hinges and the right sized screws. Not cheap, but good quality - Rob

Very generous present ( not woodwork )

Plenty of other good touring cycles around now though; my son's partner is Canadian and apparently her touring cycle had crossed the continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific...not sure of the make though. When she came to England a while ago, her father brought it over when he visited. As to...

Sharpening: need a jig? Which jig?

Not the sharpening gear that you have, but I do all my gouges etc on a water cooled diamond Tormek wheel with the appropriate jig(s). To sharpen a bowl gouge takes around 20 secs which includes a quick pass over the leather honing wheels to remove any burr. The quickest way I've found to do...

Axminster 1628VS lathe head and tail stock alignment.

In case you weren't aware, Ax sell a lathe alignment centre tool for sorting out this sort of issue. I have the same lathe and every time I switch from bowl turning to work 'twixt centres I use said tool to align both the centres. I've never had any problems - Rob

    Part turning green then season?

I found that some will split easily and others are quite difficult. I bought a froe to use for splitting and then I also use a brick bolster as well as an engineering chisel to aid the process. When I turn green wood bowls, I generally take a 'core' from them (if possible) and then turn to wall...

    General Restore

I'd agree. I bought a couple of tins from Yandles a few years ago and a little goes a very long way. Developed apparently by the British Museum for the conservation of their 'stuff'. If it's good enough for the BM, it's good enough for me  - Rob

New to joinery - Black Walnut project, what to make

Sound advice Mike, but I'd also advise the OP to remove all the sapwood before he puts it into storage - Rob

    Lime scale

Never had any sort of problem with lime scale of any sort anywhere in the house and we live in a hard water area. The reason is we're on our second Kinetico water softener (the first one only lasted 18 years :D ) - Rob
