The Veritas Large Router Plane - an idiosyncracy

I might give the wet and dry idea a go just out of interest but as I said, even if this is a flaw - and I suppose that technically it must be - I've managed to incorporate it into my working as a sort of benefit.

The Veritas Large Router Plane - an idiosyncracy

I've been trimming some tenon cheeks recently using the large Veritas router plane and have again noticed an odd little characteristic of it which can be quite useful but I can't explain how it comes about: you loosen off the locking screw, increase the depth of cut with the top screw, lock it...

    Buying PAR Timber

So in the latter eventuality it would be below PAR timber, then?

Guardian list of mystery objects at Science Museum

Given that the fret saw is glaringly obvious (I'm sure that that many non-woodworkers would be able to say on closer inspection that it is obviously some kind of sawing device), I wonder how many of the curators actually have expertise in scientific or technical backgrounds. For instance how one...

Book Review: Honest Labour by Charles H. Hayward

Graham, I think that the Campaign Furniture book represents the icing on the cake of the LAP books and it is in itself a beautiful book. I'd love to kit out a room with that sort of furniture. One day I will feel ready to take on the secret mitred dovetail challenge. In fact I'm slowly...

Book Review: Honest Labour by Charles H. Hayward

HONEST LABOUR - Volume V of the Charles H. Hayward Years This is the fifth and final book of material published by The Lost Art Press and drawn from The Woodworker magazine from its days under the editorship of Charles Hayward during the period of 1936 to 1966. It consists of a collection of...

Flattening the sole of a 5 1/2 plane

A quick update: after wielding the file of uncertain ancestry (it turns out there was one lying in the bottom of my non-woodworking toolbox) and following Tom's advice, the sole is becoming flatter. The back bit is still high but less so (and for reasons discussed above this is not a worry) but...

    Hancock's Half Hour

I should have made clear that while I've had conversations with some delightful people (by their accents Indian) it was the ill-managed nature of the systems imposed upon them which was usually the obstacle to getting anything done.

    Hancock's Half Hour

That's an interesting point. IMO the "just enough, just in time" concept has always been an accident waiting to happen and in terms of logistics it can clearly only function under optimal circumstances. It was obviously developed as one more tool on the road to maximising profit. One of the...

Flattening the sole of a 5 1/2 plane

Thank you all very much indeed for the replies. Tom's idea of a short strip of abrasive to provide targeted removal seems very logical for the high bit behind the mouth and thanks for the video link, it was very instructive. I also like AE Samuel's idea of the block for targeted removal. DW...

Flattening the sole of a 5 1/2 plane

I've got a lovely pre-war Record 5 1/2 which up to now I've used for initial flattening of boards before doing the final touches with my Veritas LAJ. The odd thing was that the Record would sort of give up and the LAJ would immediately take full width shavings. That didn't bother me too much...

    Hancock's Half Hour

This from today's Daily Telegraph might be of interest to TN: British demand for holiday homes and property in Greece has rocketed by more than 200 per cent following the British Government’s relaxation of travel restrictions, according to local and international real estate officials. Greece...

    Hancock's Half Hour

I'm sure that it's hardly controversial to point out that Greece has historically not had much of an economy. Had it been left alone, it would have been fine-(ish). However, it applied for and got EU membership. When it wanted to join the Euro it paid Goldman Sachs to cook the national books so...

Brass screws and threaded inserts - recommendations?

The one woodworking course I have found time to attend was a Dictum-run one with Garrett Hack as the instructor. It was billed as being suitable for absolute beginners and having been in possession of my first plane for about a month, I booked a place on it. Naturally I was the only complete...

Brass screws and threaded inserts - recommendations?

Mike, that is a useful tip. I live about half way between Stuttgart and Konstanz but I tend to go to Mannheim a few times a year on business, so I'll certainly make a note of your tip and try to remember to go and have a look at the place. I wonder if that's the Bauhaus I've seen from the...

I see Ghislaine Maxwell has contracted Covid in prison. Hmm

Given that Epstein's guards apparently fell asleep, I think we can take it as read that that wouldn't be allowed to happen in the case of Ms M. If the US establishment wants to cover its a**e, it is quite capable of doing that and it has enough places at its disposal where she can be kept...

Brass screws and threaded inserts - recommendations?

Thank you all very much for the replies. AES and Fidget: in principle that is what I am looking for (I'd seen something somewhere with a different retention/anchoring structure on the outside but I'm sure that will do). Now I know that I only have to pop down to the local DIY superstore...

I see Ghislaine Maxwell has contracted Covid in prison. Hmm

I think your analysis is plausible and in the light of the alleged suicide of the odious Mr Epstein, she should surely be placed in a cell of her own with all possibilities for suicide removed and be kept under constant watch. To not do that is probably negligent and is inviting problems.

    Hancock's Half Hour

TN, I agree with your line of argument here. The higher up a decision making chain one gets, the less possible it is to produce finely adjusted, tailor made solutions to problems. Therefore various factors are taken into account, the biggest one being the amount of money available. You hospital...

Brass screws and threaded inserts - recommendations?

Good Morning All, I'm after the kind of brass screws which fit into a brass tube with an interior thread, the tube being knocked into a hole drilled into a piece of wood and staying there because the surface is knurled/ribbed/hooked. Ideally the screw head should be round and flat topped...
