Kids & phones, am I getting old?

You've missed the point of what I was saying or more likely, I have not explained my point well enough. I reckon it's a fairly good idea when parents equip their kids with simple, low tech phones for security/emergency/admin purposes. What I meant by "low quality parents" is the sort of people...

Kids & phones, am I getting old?

I think that on the whole, those who were pessimistic of the effects of television have been proven right. I'm sure that we'd all live more in the "real" world if there were only two TV channels and if they shut down at 10:30 pm every weekday. The reason that will never happen is firstly because...

Kids & phones, am I getting old?

What you're saying there is deeply disturbing. My best guess of the current situation is this: There are many people, probably mostly under 35, whose waking hours are dominated by smart phone useage but who due to educational or family backgrounds are probably still capable of functioning in...

    Imperial vs Metric

Take a piece of wood or a line or anything which represents a straight length. Say you want to divide it into five equal lengths. You guestimate what looks like a fifth of the length and open up the dividers by that amount. You then "step" the points along the line. If you've fallen short, you...

    Imperial vs Metric

If you've only known metric, I can understand why you might find imperial a bit difficult. IMO there are two aspects to it: a. Getting a feel for what is e.g. 1", 6" and a foot etc. Then there's the matter of a feel for the commonest fractions: 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", and 3/4". That really...

Clifton needs to make a router plane

Walke-Moore still do make it as far as I am aware, but they seem to have supply problems. (Were my pockets deep enough I wouldn’t hesitate.) I agree however that there is a definite opportunity for Clifton to exploit.

Can you use hollows and rounds on end grain?

Thanks Andy, that seems to nail it. The sacrificial piece removes all concerns at a stroke.

Can you use hollows and rounds on end grain?

I gave the example of a sign to keep it simple. It looks like it's the old idea of sharpness and taking care. I'll have a go on a couple of scraps of cherry and walnut and see if it turns out OK. Thanks for the replies.

Can you use hollows and rounds on end grain?

I could leave this OP as just the title but a word of explanation: if you were to make, say, a sign consisting of a single piece of wood to go on a door and you fancied putting a moulding around the edge, would H & Rs be able to cope with the end grain?

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

I can relate to that post, although I tend to be less tolerant of rudeness. If I remember aright you read Private Eye which seems to me to sit with such a view. Be careful though: you might graduate to The Spectator and therein lies intellectual purgatory on account of the crossword being loads...

    Marking and measuring...

My lightbulb moment for measuring led me to a way of working which Cabinetman and Trevanion have alluded to. The bottom line is that I end up leaving numerical measurements (e.g. 1/2" or 12 mm) early on the in the project. For instance, I'm just finishing the third and (probably) final version...

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

I think we tend to lose sight of the unfortunate fact that we are all capable of bouts of great stupidity. The coffee case might have had some merit had it been possible to show that e.g. a weak paper cup or a poorly fitting lid led to the accident but otherwise we can make a cultural assumption...

Phil, would I be right in thinking that your last post has just the teensiest hint of a wind up about it?

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

I know exactly why you suggest that he overcomplicates things but I beg to differ. In my opinion what he does is to take every action which a woodworker needs to do to get precise results. Because he is committing it to DVD this means that the films give the initial impression that the work...

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

I found David Charlesworth‘s DVDs to be extremely helpful as they are so precisely detailed. Mind you, you won’t go wrong with Mr Sellars. I‘d also recommend The Essential Woodworker book by Robert Wearing (see the reviews section above).

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

I'm glad that you posted that. I got to school just after woodwork was ditched as an option. Subsequently I made the odd thing from bits of melamine-coated (if I remember rightly) chipboard and the odd bit of plywood which I got cut to size in the timber yard and my "woodworking" consisted of...

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

I'm sure that you're right in terms of any mass market goods. However, in terms of things like high end hand planes, how many different dealers is one likely to use? Price difference is probably not going to be an incentive as nobody significantly discounts Clifton, Veritas or L-N planes. What I...
