Veritas PM-V11 plane irons for Stanley & Record

No, no, no!!! That's not the idea at all! Forget this 100s of years bit: it took you 100s of hours to make and it is a statement about something to do with modern society. That way you'll be able to sell it to Tate Modern for upwards of 250K.

    Cutting a shallow circle.

Thanks chaps. It appears to be as I feared and it looks as if I will have to get a bearing guided bit. Then of course there's the matter of boning up in detail on how to use the damned thing, followed by practice runs on a bit of pine. It makes you wonder how they got by with a job like this...

    Cutting a shallow circle.

Good Morning All, I've just had my bathroom retiled etc. and I'm trying to upgrade the various ancilliaries from the level of supermarket junk. One element of this is to build a stand for toilet paper and brush holder. The new bog brush sits in a ceramic tube of about 5" external diameter. I...

Review: You Tube Channel – Treebangham

An American chap who calls himself “Treebangham” has an excellent hand tool woodworking site on Youtube. His approach involves demonstrating the making of various objects, all of which have a practical use for the woodworker. At the time of this review the titles on offer are: Saw Till Saw...

    Tyzack router plane question

... unless of course you can perfect the design by engineering all the faults out of it, something which it appears a small US firm called Walke Moore Tools has done (at a price of course): http://www.walkemooretools.com/shop/rou ... odel-2500/ It's had very good reviews and the side posts are...

    Tyzack router plane question

This is probably a daft suggestion but could it be that a previous owner fitted the plane with a blade that is too big for the side posts i.e. the one you have is not the original?

Cutting the sides of dovetail pin boards

Given that you're cutting the shoulders next to the end tails, once you've cut the knife line in, you can make use of the reflection of the wood in the saw blade. Because the cut has to be square, the reflection must run in a straight line "through" the blade. I find that it really does help...

    SDS bits in traditional braces?

Andy, that is extremely interesting. So in principle the most likely solution (given the relative rarity of the first brace you illustrate) is to get a second hand brace with a four jaw chuck. I'll keep my eyes peeled. And behold: https://www.fine-tools.com/bohr1.html Dieter Schmid offers...

    SDS bits in traditional braces?

Out of curiosity, would a traditional brace be able to decently hold a bit with an SDS or SDS-2 shaft? I ask because there are some decent looking bits with such shafts available. I presume that nobody manufactures a set of jaws with which one could adapt a brace.

Good guide for learning more about hand planes?

I couldn't agree more. The thing about The Essential Woodworker is the sheer amount of information which is held in so few pages, combined with the clarity with which it is conveyed. It's perfectly possible to understand everything in it at the first read through. However, unless you've got...

    The Wheel Marking Gauge Rant.

I've found that the following works quite well: square in the start and end of the mortice, then press the relevant chisel onto one of the lines in the desired position i.e. distance you want from the face. Then do one light line with the wheel gauge from the near point of the chisel mark...

    BU Plane Iron camber

That's what I've done with my Veritas BU Jack: just enough of the corners to eliminate the track marks and it works well.

    BU Plane Iron camber

Derek Cohen went into that in some depth on here. It might be on his In The Woodshed website.

Perfect way to clean a water stone.

That's a point. Where is Jacob? He's not got banned too, has he?

Perfect way to clean a water stone.

I actually wondered if he is Friesian/Dutch at all because his English so far has been idiomatically flawless (a non-native speaker usually gives him/herself away by some odd turn of phrase or other, not so here). I'm used to the Dutch being able to speak English at a high level but I do wonder...

Perfect way to clean a water stone.

I had a bit more of a think about this last night. PalmeRoyale obviously has got a bit of a chip on his shoulder about cabinet makers and even more so about those who produce books and DVDs for the likes of me who would like to get halfway towards being able to call themselves a cabinet maker...

Perfect way to clean a water stone.

Rudeness is in my opinion something which an adult should only use when it is justified and that is actually seldom in life. Gratuitous rudeness is childish. Rudeness combined with arrogance starts to look just stupid. Nice boats by the way.

The Woodworker - The Charles Hayward Years, Vol IV

Further to the above short review: I'm delighted to note that I'm not the only one to find Charles Haywards musings to be fascinating. The Lost Art Press appears to be collecting the bulk of them for publication in their own right, which IMHO will be something to look forward to...

The Woodworker - The Charles Hayward Years, Vol IV

Here's Vol IV of this excellent series which takes us up to a page count of 1492. This is perhaps the most entertaining volume. It is certainly the most philosophical. There is however a strong practical element as you would expect which starts with the first section on workbenches and work...

    Rust on planes from sweat.

I have no obsession whatsoever with keeping my planes looking shiny and new. What I do want to do is keep them in good order and rust is something which attacks metal. This is much the same idea as a soldier being determined to keep his rifle cleaned and oiled. Thanks for all the suggestions...
