Another one where you need to be sitting down ...

I don't think the art market matters too much. How much money individuals are prepared to pay for any kind of art is their business. It seems to me that the problems start when art becomes public and I think that the key problem is the lack of sensible public accountability. There was an...

Another one where you need to be sitting down ...

I accept all that in principle. However, the art world starts to get my back up when taxpayers' money is involved. Art is a bit like politics and crime in that nobody was ever forced into it and there seems to be an endless supply of volunteers. And everybody likes some kind of art. However...

Another one where you need to be sitting down ...

I understand what you're saying but there's a case which sort of pulls the rug from under it. Apparently there was an exhibition (possibly at Tate Modern) and there was the usual nibbles and drinks party on the opening night (the day before us oiks would have been able to get in) and a group of...

Another one where you need to be sitting down ...

I've been mulling over a couple of the ideas expressed so far on this thread. I think the most astounding one was Derek reporting that there are people who think that LN planes are too expensive to be used. I imagine that that is a minority view of a very few collectors. How many folk on here...

The #140 trick is dead ...

I just tried this on some draw components and it worked a treat, the three pieces of tape providing a very effective fence. Thanks very much for the idea. Mind you I couldn't resist a bit of heresy: I used yellow masking tape.

As you imply, ownership is ownership, irrespective of what you want to do with the owned. What is perhaps interesting is the idea of the tool as art. By definition tools were originally made for use although it was often the case that a fair bit of artistry was put into their making...

Another one where you need to be sitting down ...

Have a look at this: https://www.jimbodetools.com/collection ... amy-81021u It seems to me that the fact that this is a tool and an extremely beautifully made one to boot, is almost irrelevant. Surely what we are seeing here is an example of the tool as art and it is the price demanded which...

    Tool ****

That's interesting. I got mine from the USA a couple of months back which I would have done anyway because I prefer the imperial measurements. However, the Chinese-made ones could be just as good provided Bridge City can exercise quality control in China.

    Tool ****

I'll probably get a verbal kicking for admitting this but I've got one of these: https://www.axminster.co.uk/bridge-city ... 0mm-104571 Outrageously expensive and there's probably a cheaper alternative but it is fantastic when you need it and the magnetic sliding things really make marking...

One for the collectors: Henley Optical Company

Here's a link to a plane from the above named company (of which I had never heard) on the Jim Bode website: https://www.jimbodetools.com/collection ... ane-80119u It looks like a dream come true for serious collectors especially the notion that some items are unique. The other Henley tools on...

    Cannels - anybody know why?

Erik, I had no problems logging into it. I wonder if that's because I'm using an Apple computer? Anyway, here's a link to a youtube clip on the same subject which you might find interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIo-17SIkws

    Cannels - anybody know why?

One or two might be interested in this: http://anglish.wikia.com/wiki/Main_leaf Put simply, it's the idea of developing English as it would have looked had not the Norman pestilence come to our shores which did of course lead to the wrecking of the language or should I say tongue (tung even)...

    Cannels - anybody know why?

Droogs, I'm familiar with the seo etc. words but I'm sure that I read somewhere that we didn't have a word for "the". Was that maybe regional? I took it as a logical explanation for the routine dropping of "the" in Lancashire and Yorkshire. I've got a couple of books on OE and will dive into...

    Cannels - anybody know why?

I've managed to come up with this: læfelcant. It's a combination of the word læfel which means bowl or spoon or indeed anything which is sort of scooped out and is clearly related to the modern German Löffel which is a spoon. If we then combine that with your "cant" we get the above which...

    Cannels - anybody know why?

I'll have to withdraw my speculation as to the possible Germanic roots of the word; Bm101's bit of etymology having firmly put it in the Latinate camp ... but now I'm starting to wonder what the Anglo-Saxons would have called it!
  16. A

    Cannels - anybody know why?

My guess is that it simply came from one of the Germanic languages (we sometimes forget that English is a Germanic language and Anglo-Saxon was even more so) and it's worth noting the modern German word "Kanal" for channel in all the senses that channel is used in English as well as for things...

High or Low: A beginner's conundrum...and other questions...

He's very keen on keeping things straightforward and ungimmicky. On the other hand he's got a pragmatic attitude to newer things. Here for instance is his blog entry in which he sings the praises of ... wait for it ... the Veritas LA Jack plane...

High or Low: A beginner's conundrum...and other questions...

I just had a look at the Classic Hand Tools website and the Veritas LA Jack is 260 quid and the LN #5 is 320 quid. Of course a new BU plane is massively more expensive than a good second hand Bailey equivalent but if you buy new at the quality end, they're not too dear at all. The irons are as...

High or Low: A beginner's conundrum...and other questions...

I know you're greatly experienced and that most of what you say makes sense and IMO you don't deserve the flak you attract. However, I feel that by now I have enough experience to refute your assertion that "Modern BU planes are just a fashion trend ..." They are in fact highly effective, high...

High or Low: A beginner's conundrum...and other questions...

For books and DVDs, have a look at the Hand Tool Review links above. The first book I would recommend is The Essential Woodworker by Robert Wearing and if you can afford it, the four volumes of The Woodworker as a sort of all in one reference library. Three internet sources also spring to...
