    Media coverage of the virus

Well I am of course generalising but the standards of the employees are the responsibility of the editors/producers. When I want guaranteed high quality journalism, I read the Spectator. I forgot to mention that I also subscribe to that. Similarly when I want entertaining maliciousness, Private...

    Media coverage of the virus

I should at the start point out that my media coverage is influenced by the fact that I live in Germany: I get ARD and ZDF news, BBC World news and I subscribe to the Daily Telegraph and use the Guardian which is free. What is universal is the blanket coverage of the virus crisis. I think that...

    Learning dovetail joint

Rough surfaces can be dealt with by light use of a freshly sharpened chisel. I'm sure there will be people along who are far more knowledgeable about saws than me so I'll not discuss them. There is one thing that I found which helps accuracy with sawing the pins (and any other line that I want...

    Coronavirus

Very true. If you aspire to manage health nationally and with finite resources (inevitably the case) you will always be faced with highly discriminatory decisions about who is awarded a higher risk of dying and who will get the full benefit of treatment.

    Coronavirus

There's a lot to that. Effectively we're doomed to wait until the real game changer, an inoculation or an effective drug is produced. Incidentally, I'm half hoping that I'm one of those lucky people who only gets a mild version of it. Yesterday I got a cough out of nowhere and even felt wobbly...

    Bit of a shame

I think you have to cut DW a bit of cultural slack here. While those sort of remarks are completely beyond the pale in British circles and could even earn you a punch in the teeth from some people, it is much more normal in US culture to make very blunt - and to us brash - claims about where you...

    Friendship vs Greed

I suppose everybody would have a different approach to dealing with this but I think that mine would be - assuming that I genuinely valued the friendship and normally had high regard for this chap - would be to do nothing until running into him again once all the corona fuss has died down. Then...

    Coronavirus

I think you have to be nuts to be using the underground if you are worried about catching the virus yourself or worried about the possibility of you infecting others. But ... nobody would be forcing me to get on the underground trains. I suppose the problem is that there is a view that a lot...

    Small sofa table

I like the layout of the legs: I don't think I've seen anything like that before. IMO the legs give it an eye-catching look which make it suitable for use as a small display table e.g. for a floral arrangement.

    Bit of a shame

What you perhaps don't see is the extent to which come across as gruff. It's possible to say things very directly without (most) people getting upset. Having seen some of your videos, I think I "get" you but you need to understand that with the written word we have to take more care with phrasing.

    Bit of a shame

I think that's probably fair comment. If you add to the mix that he was also given to provoking for the sake of provoking and he was determined to never learn from fair criticism, you've probably got the whole thing summed up.

    Bit of a shame

I reckon the problem with him was that while he was knowledgeable about the craft, he was totally unskilled at explaining to other people why he profoundly disagreed with them on some matters or he simply enjoyed being provocative to the point of rudeness. If the former is the case, it was...

    Coronavirus

Proxy? Are you sure you've got the word you need? In any event I'm quite happy to accept that my judgement proved false as pointed out by Roger. And given that you don't deny that you are not Jacob, the matter appears to be most firmly closed.

    Coronavirus

I can assure you that there is nothing childish about making a judgement bases on content and style. However, I'm happy to stand corrected in the light of your personal knowledge of both of them. (I don't think there's any point in amending what I posted as it would render related posts...

    Coronavirus

You really think that Jake is not Jacob? I think I'd put a tenner on it and I'm not given to betting. But there are two things here: the culpability of the public and that of the politicians, as you have indicated. I make no distinction between a barely articulate, over-tattood, overweight...

    Coronavirus

What utter rubbish, Jacob. All people are empowered with free will and the ability to do the right thing as opposed to the wrong thing. "I blame it all on society so nobody can ever blame me" is a nonsensical mantra that we've been hearing for years and great harm has been done in its name too...

    Coronavirus

At that level things are not often black and white. A mate of mine got his BSc and PhD in biochemistry for some time he's been a professor in that discipline. However, much of his work is on computer modelling of various substances for biochemical applications. He's also doing some stuff which...

    Coronavirus

AES, I agree entirely. When I see slovenly, foul-mouthed morons in tracksuits dragging their kids around towns, I fear that I am looking at the future collapse of civilisation.

    Friendship vs Greed

Yes, I know what you're getting at: you'd go around again or you'd go to another shop, where you would also only be able to buy one item. However, in going around again you risk being recognised and bounced out of the shop or getting banned from it. In any event, making life more difficult for...

    Coronavirus

It's very difficult to legislate for people's attitudes, which is what we are discussing here. I would imagine that emergency powers in the current situation would be acceptable to most people. However, the root problem is something that has been growing for many decades. The 60s social...
