    ARE YOU THICK

Thanks Brendan, I was thinking more of the hardwoods for the best items, but perhaps ply for practice cutting initially. Wasn't sure of thichness but at 18mm it should fly through fairly easily. When I get to the intarsia, I may need some thicker parts, but expect to learn as I go. Malcolm

    timber for bandsaw boxes

Hi Alan, Most of my timber is from local merchants, although I do like to get a load when I visit Yandles shows, as they have so much on display and its easy to see what's what. I am not very knowledgable, but if it looks good I will give it a try and then get more if it works out OK...

    ARE YOU THICK

Thanks Brian, I'm getting the 'feel' on the pressure issue and not rushing, as well as not operating the blade at full speed, but about 40-50% and it's easier to follow and move. I'll have a look at those gloves, but was surprising how much better it felt with the 'painters' gloves as well as...

    ARE YOU THICK

Did a bit more practice yesterday and as I had been doing other work, I had thin rubber gloves on. I seemed to handle the scrolling more easily and wondered if others use them for scrolling? Malcolm

    ARE YOU THICK

In general terms, if there are any, what is the most popular thickness and most popular timber to scroll with? Hardwood, softwood, ply ? Malcolm

    Flying Dutchman Blades

Thanks again Barry. Looking at the Web this morning, I noticed that Niqua also do a Niqua Ultra in a Red packaging. Do you know if those are better, or is it just 'marketing'? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/fretsaw-blade ... 1978321464 Malcolm

    Flying Dutchman Blades

Thanks for the replies Guys, all usefull info. I have just been trying a few Pegasus and FD blades and narrowed my choice to a couple of Pegasus and a couple of FD's. I did add my little review and show the square of ply I used for the test on the end of my 'HOW MANY' blades question.(...

Where is the easiest place to get FD blades now please? Do they all come from abroad or is there a UK outlet? Malcolm

    Advice for total newbie

Hi Fergus and welcome to the forum. Those are wise words from the sundaytrucker, start very gradually and build up when you know more. For each tool you need, you can ask forum members what is best or economical and as Paul Sellers has said in his sharpening video, chisels at £8 a set can do...

What did you do in your workshop today ?

Reached about half way thgrough making a pair of 'mirrored' boxes. More sanding, flocking, handles and finishing to do yet. Malcolm

    HOW MANY

I took a step forward today, having decided to try out the variety of blades I already had. I wanted to see how each blade performed, so selecting each and making a cut into 1/4" ply seemed a good idea. This way I can feel how each blade feels when cutting, see the actual width of the cut...

    HOW MANY

    .....................What's that, the 3rd teeth?

    HOW MANY

Not worth knocking your teeth out for Andy.    Easier to use the plastic test tubes from Amazon. Malcolm

    Safety?

Trend Airace half mask is excellent, comfortable to wear for long periods and will not steam up glasses if you wear them, which I do all the time & no problem. http://www.manomano.co.uk/catalogue/wel ... GwodDcEPBg Malcolm

    Rookie bandsaw problem

Mark, not on green wood for blanks, they are not strong enough. The 3/4 blade was OK, but I suspect it may be application, sap or set up.

    New shed Sea King

I would have thought that a container may be better, unless you are looking for more of a garden feature
