    Veneer identification

I do not think it was a usual veneer when that was made Giantbeat...but then I don't know how old you are...... Just out of interest, what did you use it for?

Second for cherry.... very unlikely to be elm

    Ban on airtravel

I would suggest, Scruples, that this is rather a simplistic view of the right/left, rich/poor debates. Certainly at the moment it can take quite a bit of effort just to stay afloat in this climate without getting rich....or perhaps even needing to. Having enough is good for some folks. Quite a...

    Anyone worked with holly?

Agree with replies above. Bit of a waste of holly. Not strong enough. Laminate if you are using wood. None of the woods that you mentioned seem appropriate. If you must use wood use laminated spruce. Use epoxy resin for laminating .....and perhaps invest in a blade with a finer kerf. I have...

Squirrels. Love ‘em or hate ‘em?

Cats are our problem..... We live in an area with quite a few rare ground nesting birds.... corncrakes, snipe... Someone moved in recently next door with 3 cats which we watch hunting through the surrounding fields.... .......this year no calling corncrakes or snipe.... Any suggestions...apart...

    Buying wood from tree surgeons

There maybe someone in your area with a woodmiser or similar....a mobile chainsaw on a track that can cut logs into planks. Have used that for larch & oak. Boards not that accurate but then easier to shift, stack & season.

    Wood filler

If it is a guitar you could always embelish the fault...... fine brass or bronze dust in epoxy glue will sand, polish & varnish beautifully.......... that is if you can be bothered with the time/expense...?

    Wooden boat repairs

Very Nice. Always good to see a wooden boat restored. Any chance of photographs in the water?

    Wooden Slipper Launch Wine CupHolders

2 L shaped mahogany pieces screwed under the gunwale then thinnish mahogany board with glass cutout that slides in when needed? Should n't roll too much on the Thames.....

    Wooden boat repairs

Looks a lovely boat. Can see why you are saving it. What type of wood are you using for the gunwale & shearstrake? I assumed it was larch but in the photos it looks a bit pale.

Green or seasoned oak for shipbuilding?

You could try a book source like 'Ships of British Oak' by A J Holland. Focuses mainly on shipbuilding in Hampshire but the principles & practices are similar across many parts of the UK tho the timber species varied. Many ships were fastened using wooden pegs...trenails (treenails)...so...

    Lathe sale

I think you are being rather unkind to Braggi J-G. e-Bay appear to me to have very poor security. I had a similar experience to Braggi some years ago when an e-Bay account was set up in my name without me knowing, & 2 sales made with the money disappearing. The buyers involved the police who...

    How to clean wooden planes

Agree with Andy.....wipe off any sticky crud... wipe on some teak oil... then just admire that patina of age & woodworking. Would def not scour off that history of use & affection with steel wool. Sharpen & use..... enjoy

    One for the eggheads

Lovely little Stuart Turner boat engine, prob no UJ the 4 bolts & would go on the plate of the prop shaft. Have seen engines in a similar state in a sunken boat that were lovingly restored. All you need are a couple of good boat jumbles to get the bits.....and a boat? Liked Jacob's comments...

Larch vs. treated softwood for fence?

Larch for fence is very durable.....treated or not.... but it will go grey. Suggest you make sure that it is European Larch & not Japanese Larch as some ornamental stuff finds its way into sawmills & it is not durable at all. Also suggest you get envoronmentally acredited FSC timber.... & not...

    Making a wooden butter churn.

Good point Adam, unfortunately quarter sawn is best ...but probably tricky to get....especially where you are. Try Cromarty Timber. They are a bit father south from you but superb at cutting out just the right wood...if they have it.

    Making a wooden butter churn.

Suggest you do not use glue at all. Make dry then barrel should snug up when wet and fitted together with bands. Oak will be fine but you can soak it all once assembled ....whisky prob best but water will also work to get rid of tannin. The staves inner curve can be planed up with a concave...

Anybody have any idea what species of wood this is?

Another vote for Iroko. Often has silicate grains in it & makes hand planning of boat planks a lengthy process.
