    Hello from Essex

Many thanks for the photos. It is cheering to see such machinery and skills in use. It used to be such a pleasure to go into sheds/yards such as yours and see things being made & repaired. The closure of the yard nearby on the island was a great loss.

    Drilling stainless steel

Agree mostly with Sideways & Sawtooth but if it is marine/A4 stainless then cobalt for me would be essential...especially if someone else is paying. BTW this is much more interesting than the Royalty thread...........

    Long dog hair....

....prob not sheep shears. Expensive, noisy, heavy. Have reasonable ones in pet wharehouse sites.

Drying wet wood vs drying green wood?

Suggest seal the ends & cover it ....but not with a dark fabric if poss. Sit them on something that keeps them off the ground & that does not wick water up into boards. They may move a bit depending on where you are. What wood is it?

    Queen Elizabeth has passed away.

I am not an ardent royalty fan but I think you are wrong Noel. The idea of, as a republic, a president Thatcher, Blair, Jonstone or Truss and the amount of fuss & expense that would entail does not persuade me to remove royalty. It is the position they deny that I believe is crucial, & I suspect...

    Uffa Fox at Cowes

Many thanks for the photos Seas. Brings back memories of a lot of boaty work. Wood, brass, copper....a beautiful... but time comsuming combination.

    Dimensioning by hand

...is 'in the past'a key phrase here? Timber used to be cut/dimensioned by hand frequntly as often little else was available in small operations. Folk had the skills to do it. But could I suggest that the wood was better, & more carefully seasoned, & this made converting large lumps of wood into...

Getting rid of the redness in larch

Bring it up to Scotland, It seems to go grey very speedily here... permenantly...... unless, of course, you have used it for something ......

Raised panel doors and yacht varnish tips for the weary.

I hate to put yet more spanners into an already cluttered works.... but......if it is iroko, it contains oil - like teak & although it may be old iroko, some fillers & glues may not hold too well. Acetone wipe will enable stuff to stick. This is prob all over thinking tho. Add me in against...

Raised panel doors and yacht varnish tips for the weary.

You might want to try a profile guage....a lot of pins/fine bits of metal/plastic in a frame that can copy molding shapes. Some are quite cheap & should work a whole heap better than blutack. Thanks for the interesting link Jacob.

    Heatwave

Not now Woodie. .....just to throw more logs on the fire ...... we have the benefit of the SNP alternative here rather than having to swither about Tory or Labour.....or Lib Dem. There are other parties.......

"Well, I woke up this mornin'..."

True Artie, We have just renewed a business contract & got £12 off it. They seem quite keen to retain customers....but having said that would have chosen Plusnet if they provided in our area. Used them before & they were excellent.

    150mm round pipe?

This will only be true if the 'sucker' is capable of shifting that much air. A larger bore pipe may be less efficient at shifting the debris than a smaller bore ....but then there is obvoiusly too small. I find that 100mm works fine for my machine ...even from a thicknesser. I have tried a...

    Upgrade of my chisels

May be $200 is not a waste of money....may be he does not have it....I know I do not for a set of chisels. ....and I know I have had to buy less than the best in tools or equipment in the hope it will do a job, bring in enough money to buy better....maybe....latter ......unless I have to spend...

    Upgrade of my chisels

....so true Jacob....I tend to work with a small comforting selection.....but there is in the drawer a chisel or tool that I rarely use.... but when I use it nothing else really fits the bill......

What wood is this and how best to finish

Well you could leave it to turn silver as Johnbs suggests, and it will.....but you are in the hot, sunny south where the sun will dry out the natural oils from the teak surface and this will produce surface cracking/crazing. For the teak to last longer paint it with teak oil ....leave it to soak...

What wood is this and how best to finish

Teak=marine teakoil. Works ok on Iroko too. If it does the job on boats/ships out in all weathers then prob ok in your garden. Needs re-coating every few years depending on conditions.

    Heatwave

That one has already been sorted Billy .... many times...the best was a Dutch study from 1994 ish that differentiated the change in solar flux from sun spots with overall warming...ie global rise minus changes in incoming radiation( sorry, too busy today to find ref). There is still excess...

    Veneer identification

Thanks gb.... understand the tag now. So many questions..... Does the wood species matter to the sound? I assume so. ....& other factors such as the glue you use. Always interesting to hear about the way other folk use wood. Cheers
