Bought some nice joiners stuff on Ebay this week.

If it is Greenheart Adam, as Worn Thumbs kindly suggested, then I suspect your plane has lasted longer the the makers lungs. As Max Power said it is not pleasant to work with.

Superb Adam. Lignum it probably is.....I have not seemn many planes in Greenheart.......

I was tempted to suggest a float test but some folk are adverse to that sort of things with tools. Navy did it all the time......

Looks some nice tools Adam. I hate to say it though, especially to you, but it does not look like Lignum grain to me....but then I do not have it in my hand.

Best paint for a galvanised/slightly rusted metal roof?

Our barn roof is like that. We use black bitumen paint....although it does come in green... Lasts on an exposed site about 4-6 years & is cheapish. You said it might be too hot in summer but at least it may be a little warmer in winter......& judging by the summer you have had in England a bit...

Summer's coming to an end ...

Just to provide a bit of perspective....& inappropriate glee.....it has been a grand summer here in the North West. Warm with usually just enough breeze to keep the midges away & the turbines turning. I think we will pay for it later though if the masses of roan berries are anything to go by.

    What wood?

Walnut veneer? Relatively cheap....put on a ply base?

The joys of electric car ownership!

My opinion - perhaps appropriately for a wood working site - is that we are screwed. And that opinion is not just based on 50 years working with wood, but also time spent on research into air quality & the environment. When political parties - on both sides of the Atlantic can see power & votes...

Looks interesting. Polish it, put it on the wall til you need it. Conversation piece.

I appreciate where you are going with this one Adam.....but would the craftsmen of the 14/15th century have access to the metal or cutters/grinders to easily make & sharpen such scrapers?

I was Adam, unfortunately, considering the UK. Certainly in Europe there are beautiful swathes of well managed timber, but less so in the UK as far as harwood is concerned. There was an old woodyaard in the middle of the New Forest that would cut out superb oak for frames, planks & knees for me...

But Adam, one of the problems we have now is the quality of wood available. I suspect there was a much better selection available in past centuries & certainly in my area of work....old boats/ships, the qulaity of timber was superb. You seem to have access to some excellent oak, but I know I...

Thanks for the reply Adam. An interesting exercise. Please could you leave a reference to the dissertation when you are done. I assume you...or someone has trawled through the pictures of medieval craftsmen at work. Religious archives? I assume also that you used a circular saw to get to the...

Why oak Adam. Is it to match existing panels? You seem to have a source of clear timber.

    Yet another Wood ID thread

More pink than red. Suspect none of the birch from around here is good enough for ply. Wood, especially UK wood like oak, ash...& birch.... can have variations in colour & grain due to the environment it grows in. Just sayin...... That is what makes id contentious. If there were still leaves...

All Birch. There is bark variation along the length of the trunk with rougher towards the base. Bark too pale for cherry.
