    Clamping/ Press advice

Don't use pu glues.....as others have suggested. ...but make sure environment & wood are warm & dry enough. Do not use too much pressure whatever glue you use & put cling film between. Book press would be great for what you are doing if you can borrow, hire or buy one.

    Shortening a fence

Got any clamps? If so ...as others have suggested ... 2 straight bits of wood..one each side as guides & to stop wood splitting as it will then handsaw with a hard point. You will feel better for it...& save you the cost of an electric saw you may never use again....unless you have more fences?

    A smoking ban?

You have been reading the mail again haven't you Roy! You are making simplistic political points which do not stand up to analysis. It is sad to see an important debate demeened by such ill informed, polarised oppinions....... on both sides. For example shipbuilding was lost for a range of...

Hot Dipped vs Zinc Coated Galvanised Nails - which for roofing?

Not with good quality hot dipped Krome. BZP deffinitely. The wisdom I was always told by old non-yachty boatbuilders is that the galv acts to wear with the steel/iron. Certaily the good old Galv nails lasted better than copper on a heavy exposed roof....can only say what my relatively limited...

Hot Dipped vs Zinc Coated Galvanised Nails - which for roofing?

Suggest you do not use Stainless with cast iron unless you sleeve it. Cast will rust more quickly, especially near the sea. Electrolysis. Also suggest against copper nails in exposed conditions with heavy slates. The movement of the slates wears them. Did a re-roofing job where heavy...

    Wild fires in BC Canada.

Time to put some of those small Rolls Royce nuclears reactors in all those out of the way places....Cornwall perhaps?

    Wild fires in BC Canada.

OK...I have stood on the sidelines with this one, but no longer. Deema much as I respect your opinions on other matters, you really have in essence continued to kick the can down the road. Nothing you have offered fits within the timescale we probably have to do anything meaningful about about...

Sharpening north west gouges & Chisels

Personally I would have said 'middle England'. If the term 'North West' is blithely used it excludes Scotland ... & perhaps that is accepted & common place. Assuming one wants/needs to be inclusive then at least NW England or mid UK. I know it might seem nitpicking but I, as do many towards the...

Woodworking has been a human passion for nearly half a million years!

I think....or hope that it would have been a passion for some who had their brains wired to think in 3D & about the behaviour of materials. Hard graft does not mean it could not be enjoyable or a passion developed and new ways of doing things created......

Sharpening north west gouges & Chisels

Sorrry to be contentious on a sharpening thread ........but Cheshire is not in the North West. I also agree with Jacob et al. Learn to sharpen your own chisels...a few at a time. It will help you understand how they work best.

    Wild fires in BC Canada.

I would suggest that it will be humans that will be in an unstable state. The planet will probably just heave a huge sigh of relief... & get on with things......

    Wild fires in BC Canada.

????? ....so are you trying to put a lid on discussions outside of woodworking? Are you say the forum is not for oppinions...... Do you just not agree? Or did you just wake up grumpy? You must have been on the forum long enough by now to know that folks come from a variety of backgrounds...&...

    Wild fires in BC Canada.

Back in the mid 90s a fair bit of work was done by a number of scientific groups, especially in Holland, to dissect out the changes in solar radiation/flux from the overall changes in global teperature. There is still a steady rate of increase due solely to human activity. I find it difficult...

    India’s successful Moon Landing

Well there's the UK....not unadulterated socialism but it did bring NHS, improved education... Cuba initially did well too....but that's another argument & well away from Indian moon landings....

    India’s successful Moon Landing

You both miss the point...tho I am sure I did not explain it well. I did not say abolish...check....far too draconian..... but private schools do promote an us & them culture... and also at the cost of taking some of the best pupils out of the public system. Make education so good that private...

    India’s successful Moon Landing

I think you have more faith in voters than I do Phil. If we had a more unbiased popular press, better education...& got rid of as many private schools as we could... Voters might be better informed as to the consequences of their votes...

    DIY Beeswax polish

Mine a mixture of Steve & Phil... Has to be proper turpentine. Needs carnauba wax...though this may be difficult to source. Make sure it is good, clean, hard beeswax. Ratio will vary on what you want to do with it.

    India’s successful Moon Landing

I did some work in India in the mid 90s. Visited the Indian satellite remote sensing centre in Jodpur. Satellites & set up as good or better than UK. 2 days later in the Thaar desert I was watched a farmer repair a camel cart with a bow drill. Had an interesting set of tools...... A country of...
