    THE FOURTH OF JULY

Profit is not always a 'dirty' word but it is frequently abused in relationship to the NHS. Think PPE & Covid, profit & drug industry..... If it is used to re-invest in research then fine but if the NHS can operate more cheaply withoutout paying out profit that disappears offshore then so much...

    THE FOURTH OF JULY

Look at the 'think tank' 1828 that campaigns to abolish the NHS. I think you will find a number of Tory MPs listed there including John Penrose. His wife, Dido Harding , just happened to be appointed by BJ (illegaly) to run Test & Trace during Covid.

    Buying from Europe

....apart from the folk in Northern Ireland, Scotland and a largish proportion of the rest. A recent article in the F Times.... a few days ago analysed the impact of Brexit on British economy....the verdict....we all lost! ...& will continue to do so....

    THE FOURTH OF JULY

'.....They encourage children to realistically aspire to leadership roles.....' Not in my experience Terry. I have done a fair amount of practical work for the products of Eton, Harrow & a number of other noble education establishments. Almost universally they have failed to grasp the practical...

    THE FOURTH OF JULY

Now there is a conversation I would like to sit in on....a common room in Eton with students having an energetic discussion on the best way to sharpen a chisel....... I sincerely believe that would bring about a change in our society.....an appreciation & understanding of the importance of...

    THE FOURTH OF JULY

I would suggest that the failure to technically & practically train has helped precipitate industrial decline. When I was teaching many years ago the Thatcher led government encouraged the removal of woodworking & metalworking classrooms.......later Blair encouraged meaningless...

    THE FOURTH OF JULY

May I suggest that you vote for the person that you think will be best for their constituency. We have been very lucky with our MP in that respect. He has also turned out to be an excellent parliamentarian as well...even if his party is not in power in Westminster. Cynicism is fine but it does...

Wooden nails? Who’d of thunk it?

...looks as tho they were pre-drilled to me. Cannot imagine that going into timber without. Lignin 'welding' also seems a misuse of terms.....friction seems to be involved rather than melting.....?

    It Stopped Raining

I suspect you will not need to bring any more 'weeds' in. There are usually still some ineresting, indigenous species in the seed bank so just have a deepish dig, turn over the soil & see what comes up. Hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised.

    Whisky tumblers -advice please

Most whiskies have a very delicate finnishing process desinged to give just the right flavour. Most have already been in an oak barrel of various types...again to give just the right flavour. Putting it in an oak cup will add another level of flavour that you will not be able to control..... it...

    Wood 'Grown to shape'

Historically folk took a longer view of supplying the trees & timber that would be needed for the future...especially for the construction of naval vessls. In the New Forest around the once thriving ship building centre at Bucklers Hard side branches of oak were frequently pegged into a curve to...

    Buying from EU

It is def not just a case of getting an act together. 2 large multi-nationals who pay us have sorted it. They used to use British banks & now pay us via Irish banks. Hardly a win for the UK! Other smaller businesses like us do not have the time or money to set up the frequently elaborate...

    Curved door

Even some larger Canadian boats were done this way and look really nice. Some were exported to the UK ...perhaps in the 60s.....they are a pig to repair properly! I used matched molding planes to create new planking. Doors look god tho.

    Buying from EU

I am not too sure what experience you have or if you are just swayed by ideology. We have just received today some goods from Holland. There was a quite high minimum order amount as Heron said, & on checking this is because of the additional issues that are now involved in dealing with the UK...

    Oak bench finish (outdoor)

You may find that the oak goes blue/black where it is in contact with the iron. Paint the iron with a metal paint (Hammerite?) to prevent this. There are marine protective oils rather than varnish that can be a better option on the oak.

    Clamping/ Press advice

yes it was a bit blunt Brian but done in haste....sheep to feed. The words 'novice' & 'thin plys' made me think that PU would not be the best. Some foam and in cool weather can be a bit sluggish. Not easy to clamp in an A4 size. Personally I would go for epoxy. Weigh it out. Make sure the...
