    Will this layered finish work?

The finish I've planned for a few small items I'm making at the moment is danish oil followed by garnet shellac to add some warmth, then buff up with carnauba wax. I'm happy with the tests I've done on scraps, just wondering whether I'm going to run into any obvious problems as I've never...

    Roughing gouge for bowls

From my limited turning experience I would imagine that grinding the corners off your spindle roughing gouge might reduce the tendency to catch slightly, but because the tool is so much bendier than a bowl gouge the vibration would still be problematic, making it hard to control and hence still...

Would it be a stupid idea ...

The article is based on a chair maker's design, presumably for use on a machine probably dedicated to turning legs of more or less the same length all the time. It looks to be made from a couple of hardwood 2x6s screwed and glued together , bolted down to the lathe bed. I can see that a metal...

Would it be a stupid idea ...

On the basis that catches on a spindle are likely to be less exciting than on a bowl, does anyone have any thoughts about the long wooden tool rest described in the current issue of Fine Woodworking? I can see the appeal for making multiples of anything longer than a standard tool rest. Is this...

First attempt at a river table

For coating like that you should be fine.I'd just get it out of the mixing pot and into a shallow roller tray or similar as soon as you're done stirring. Either that or get it poured onto the surface you're laminating and spread out- either way will keep the heat from the setting reaction from...

Is there anything special about a woodturning spindle blank?

Thanks, confirmed what I'd thought---the premium is for the convenience of having them crosscut and stored on their shelf. I've got a shelf of my own and a crosscut saw! G

Is there anything special about a woodturning spindle blank?

I'm relatively new to this, so perhaps I'm missing something, or overthinking.... I understand that cross grain blanks for bowl turning need special preparation to reduce the risk of cracks forming while they sit on the shelf waiting to be used. But spindle blanks are presumably a different...

    Battery refurb or clone replacement?

It isn't doornail dead, but it triggers the bad cell/fault indicator on the charger and it won't take enough charge to do any actual work. When I googled replacement batteries the hits I got were mainly unbranded clones and several firms who strip and remanufacture old batteries with new cells...

    Battery refurb or clone replacement?

Has anyone any experience of getting a battery cell replaced? The reason for asking is I've an 18V NiMH which no longer works. It's not had that much use, but the sporadic nature of my hobbying hasn't done it any favours. It's partner seems fine and the drill is too good to scrap in favour of Li...

2 part polyurethane - shelf life once opened?

The catalyst normally goes off after a while- ends up looking a bit like PU glue. I imagine the base is ok for a bit longer but most makes only sell the base/catalyst together. Cost wise it's best to buy in the smallest quantity possible and use in biggish batches- I try to open the catalyst tin...

    Non slip paint?

Another option is to add something soluble and crystalline when the finish is beginning to gel. Once fully set you wash it away leaving a nice rough surface. Sugar works well on small boats and is easy to repair when it wears down.

    M3 brass screws

Just in case this is of use to anyone , I've just ordered a bunch of silicon bronze screws from https://www.seaware.co.uk/ They do brass and stainless (including marine grade) as well. G

Balancing wheels of a budget grinder/ buying a balanced one

I had to shim mine using card and masking tape between the wheel and the paper 'washer' and was able to stop almost all the vibration without dressing away a substantial amount of the wheel. It might be worth trying this before 'turning' the wheels to round, as part of the vibration seems to...

    Finishing ash staked chair

Custard's point strikes a resonant chord for me. Furniture in our house is still subjected to the sticky mitts treatment- the thought of which combined with the open grain of ash makes me shudder! Never mind the finish suiting the historical context of the piece- nobody wants to sit on the icky...

Does anyone here have a vinyl cutter/plotter?

Could you transfer laser print toner onto the metal as an acid resist? We used to use that method for making PCBs at school. There are a few vids on youtube showing different methods to transfer the toner- you might need access to somebody else's office equipment! G

    Finishing ash staked chair

I've had reasonable results in the past with bog standard emulsion. Rolled on and well burnished with wire wool. Has the advantage of almost limitless colour options and cheap as chips- should be able to cover a chair with a tester pot so I won't be stuck with a nearly full tin which is too good...

    Finishing ash staked chair

Thanks for all the suggestions. At the moment we seem to be erring towards duck egg blue  . I've no problem with that per se, as long as people don't assume that it's an attempt at shabby sh**e! So I shall try to retain these ideas for future reference and apply myself to finding the...

    Finishing ash staked chair

I'm just about to glue up my second staked chair. I'd originally planned to finish with a coat of shellac sanding sealer and then chestnut microcrystalline wax. Now doubts are creeping in. Is the sealer necessary? I have no problem with topping up the wax periodically, but will there be enough...

    How many clamps?

Of course! That was the reason I kept all those scraps under the bench, honest.

    How many clamps?

The inside of the screws?! Seriously though, it's more practical to get a haircut before a big event, maybe cut your toenails a bit shorter than usual. The front end(which doesn't get any load) was just about still stuck down once all the screws were removed. The fortunately the ply is only a...
