A definitive guide to the bandsaw? Recommendations sought

Is there a good book out there to show me the full potential of the machine? I get along fine making rip cuts and small cross cuts, but the table /mitre gauge on my elektra Beckum 316G is a bit limiting for longer cross cuts. I have the impression that with the right jigs, sleds and some...

How to remove furniture paste/wax before painting

I could be mistaken, but I think the Liberon wax polish remover is based on naphtha- ie you need a solvent to leach out the wax, unless you plan on sanding off the surface layer containing the old wax?

    Paint options for exterior woodwork

Wow, that sounds almost too good to be true. If it’s as effective and compatible as they claim I can probably just strip the failed section of paint back to a good edge and leave doing a complete redo until things settle down, annual leave or some other mug to get up a ladder on my behalf. I...

    Paint options for exterior woodwork

I've no hope of getting our regular painter this year, though given the extent/speed with which the paint is lifting on our bay windows I'm not sure I want him back anyway. So the time has come to do the first bit of outdoor painting I've tackled in ages, and I have to confess I'm finding the...

Inside Bowl - Final Cut Problem

Richard Findley explained this really well in a video clip on instagram recently

Grinder upgrade. What's the best bet currently?

I have to confess I would have no idea where to source replacement washers of that type from, short of asking the retailers customer services nicely. To clarify, not a strap clamp, just a pistol grip type clamp to hold the sides of the opposite stone. Just frustrating to have nothing to grip...

Grinder upgrade. What's the best bet currently?

All true. I don't recall exactly but given limited free time I think I balanced the wheels in the fewest number of steps possible, probably without going down to a bare spindle. I do recall a tedious process, and much frustration at the poor tolerance of the wheels. The only washers present are...

Grinder upgrade. What's the best bet currently?

Sort of what I was thinking, the sorby jig I already have. Unfortunately Axminster stopped carrying them a few years ago in favour of their own brand, and nowhere else appears to either to the extent that I wonder if they're still in production.

The best thing to seal the wood.

I recently got a big block of paraffin wax from Axminster, pretty reasonably priced. Used a hot air gun to melt shavings direct onto the end grain. Worked really well. Next time I'll be borrowing the cheese grater from the kitchen!

Grinder upgrade. What's the best bet currently?

Finally completed the other tasks that had kept me from turning some fresh material I recently acquired. Felt as though I was beginning to get back some feel for the tools by the time I'd finished roughing out , not to mention the satisfaction of being knee deep in shavings. However, my grinder...

How to deal with embedded wood screw in a bowl

Sounds like something I ought to give some thought. Could you give more detail about metal detectors? Is there a specific type to look for for this application? And how to you use it- is it a matter of scanning the piece once at the outset and abandoning if there is an inclusion? How deep into...

    Drill bits for concrete.

That or the Bosch multi-construction bits (the ones with the flutes painted blue) these have worked for me round our house where the bricks are about the hardest I've ever come across. Including with the hammer action turned off for the sake of accuracy. Amazing G

    Electronic signatures and computer issues

We occasionally get contracts at work which require an e-signature which I do using Acrobat Reader- which I downloaded free onto my mac. Signatures are set up with a password. It very much depends how the document has been compiled as to whether this is necessary. I wouldn't say it's...

Can Trend Airshield filters be sterilized?

It's a good thought, but I would have said almost certainly not. To some extent it depends on the precise nature of the occupational exposure, but equipment that's changed on a sessional basis rather than in between individual patients is risky to the user because it gets dirtier and dirtier as...

most efficient way to process a log?

The plan was to rough turn it now and finish in a few months. So I'm planning a couple of bowls, really just for the practice getting to a pleasing shape. The log is now in two pieces with the ends sealed with paraffin wax. That was a couple of hours effort with a handsaw, hammer and wedge-...

most efficient way to process a log?

Sounds about right. The largest possible pieces would be by splitting straight down the middle, but would waste away about three inches from either end. There might be some advantage to this, as though it is freshly cut, there is already very faintly visible shrinkage in the cut ends. The...

most efficient way to process a log?

Little experience using green material. Could anyone advise the least wasteful way to divide this up? It's just shy of 11inches across and about 16 inches long. I can fit 9inches over the bed . Would it be best to just split it down the centre to get 2 bowls of 10 inches diameter? Secondly, any...

Anyone doing any woodworking this weekend?

Got as far as dry fitting this telephone table for my parents, mostly using the fabric of their old bed. The legs need some inside taper, but I'm undecided about the shelf (single glued up panel vs T/G or shiplapped with room to move, and floating in a groove or sitting on a rebate). Hopefully...

    lacquer/varnish. Morrell's etc

I'd have thought Epifanes or International 2 pack. BUT unless you're planning to strip the old finish you'll need to check compatibility.

    A 'woodie' Christmas puzzle

Bearing guided rebate cutter to waste out the middle bit? I had a similar issue making this... Creating matching internal and external cuts gave me a headache. I think I ended up using an intermediate scrap piece. HTH
