Post a photo of the last thing you made

Intuitively that would be the case. I think when leaning backward the tendency will be for the weight of the sitters legs to counterbalance the weight of the trunk, whereas with a single front leg there would be no such counterbalance and so it might be easier to tip it over by leaning forward...

No, it’s steam bent ash. The spindles are ash and the rest is redwood. It’s Chris Schwarz’s design with Pete Galbert’s legs. I’m fairly pleased with it, but you’re right, I think it would punish the nappish!

Unavoidably spending more time sitting and less time doing at work this year. Getting a bit fed up with dull and not terribly comfortable chairs I decided to make my own. Currently plotting a garish paint job which will hopefully keep my colleagues off it!

Bosch PBD 40 drill on offer

I’m working on the assumption it will have less runout than my current bottom of the range Axminster craft, and the benefits of electronic speed control, no slipping belt, functional depth stop etc. It’s much cheaper than the upgrades I had been considering.

Bosch PBD 40 drill on offer

Tempting. I'm struggling to find a spec that includes the throat dimension though. Any current users with that information to hand?

    Axminster ring centres tip diameter?

Exactly this. Just roughed out four 5/8" spindles about 17" long as an exercise to get back some feel with the skew after many months doing other stuff. A too heavy cut, anything approaching a catch, or vibration in the middle of the spindle just slowed the workpiece down. One piece finished a...

    125mm ROS recommendations sought....

Thanks guys. The RO90 could be just the thing. For the last couple of years I've been making do with a delta attachment on my Makita multi tool, which while it does sort of work is a bit of a compromise, so it would kick that into touch as well. With a 150mm already in hand, 90mm makes slightly...

    125mm ROS recommendations sought....

I find myself with a whole house worth of woodwork to paint. The existing gloss is fairly yellow and very hard so I have no intention of stripping right back to bare wood, just need to get enough off the surface to take new paint. I have a Metabo 450 for the bigger areas. But the lower three...

    Axminster ring centres tip diameter?

Thanks Paul. That's what it looked like in the video clip on the Axi site. I phoned the local store this morning to ask.... call routed through to head office where a very helpful chap verified that the website doesn't elaborate. He kindly phoned back a couple of hour later, presumably after...

    Axminster ring centres tip diameter?

If anyone happens to have a set of these, could you let me know the measurement of the (business) end? The website doesn’t give the dimensions unfortunately. I want to turn some chair spindles at 5/8” tapering down to 1/2” or maybe 7/16” if I can keep the middle steady enough(!). So I’m hoping...

Want a second banjo to support a long toolrest on my old Record CL2

Any ideas where I might track one down? An existing one would be less hassle than getting something fabricated I imagine.

Cedar strip canoe - moving swiftly on

Highly recommend these guys https://www.ecfibreglasssupplies.co.uk/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3cOH5IHk4AIVCLDtCh2rWAy8EAAYASAAEgIN0vD_BwE I've never used anything but West epoxy for dinghy projects. It's never let me down yet. Shelf life is fine, and I've had no problems using stuff past it's date...

    sharpening system.....

+1 The difference in cost between a tormek and a standard bench grinder plus a jig is enough to keep you in turning tools for probably years. And I've heard that a tormek is a really slow way to sharpen HSS. I used to aspire to owning a super slow wet grinder. But I have realised that I can...

    Enough clamps??

My wife developed a strategy of putting a £2 coin in a jar whenever she got one since they weren’t all that much use on a day to day basis when they were first widely in circulation. In a short space of time it became a fairly substantial slush fund for the occasional purchase of shoes or bags...

Cost for wood to be cut to length

Is it Robbins by any chance? I was looking at their site earlier on. TBH being at the opposite end of the country I tend to only occasionally get fancy marine ply from them which is unavailable elsewhere. I used to know a few boatbuilders who got most of their material from them as the quality...

    1930s staircase spindles

We’re getting a 1930s semi ready for my elderly mother in law. The stairs have two horrid patterned glass panels which seem like an accident waiting to happen. So, it would be nice to replace with appropriate spindles. Our house is the same but I think a previous owner mucked about with things...

    Project 1: Bench Hook

Mine is (ahem) long enough to reach about halfway across my bench. I recently discovered that means I can flip it round to hook onto the back of the bench, and lo it works with a Japanese saw as well.

FTAGH Guillotine, potentially free to a good home. Milton Keynes

I should add it's near Milton Keynes, and weighs rather a lot but will dismantle with the correct whitworth spanners!

FTAGH Guillotine, potentially free to a good home. Milton Keynes

The great difficulty is that I'm at the opposite end of the country from it. My mother in law is in no state to handle selling it and my wife and I don't have the time to traipse backwards and forwards to facilitate it really either. First priority is to have it gone. Second priority is for it...

FTAGH Guillotine, potentially free to a good home. Milton Keynes

My late father in law was a board game developer of some repute. Amongst various items which now need to be cleared is a large cast iron guillotine used for cutting game components (card mainly). I'm afraid I don't know much about it, and there doesn't appear to be a prominent makers mark...
