It's hard to believe, but stanley still makes a #7

I think Veritas is the gold standard when it comes to companies doing proper engineering to come up with innovative new products at reasonable cost. Lie-Nielsen makes nice stuff and Clifton too, but come on, break free from the mould and do something new for a change. Modern manufacturing can be...

It's hard to believe, but stanley still makes a #7

I think the correct spelling is "Stanley" between quotes, because there is a world of difference between those and even the not great late UK ones. I have a #4 from the last UK made series and one from China, and the UK one is not great, but the China made one is pretty bad, the castings are...

Sold CLIFTON NO. 5 1/2 JACK PLANE

60-65% of new value is a common asking price for used items, a bit lower for tools with markings, a bit higher for items which are in as new condition. With shipping added. Your asking price is higher than that, especially with shipment added, so more patience is needed, people really do value...

    Pallet Wood

Yeah, measuring is hard! Keep getting confused which side of the ruler to use :D

    Pallet Wood

Fitted the drawing this morning. Will say that the pine is very fragile, so keep a bottle of thin superglue handy. I cracked the drawer front when carefully paring the sockets for the half blind dovetails.

    Pallet Wood

Sort of finished (needs some hanging hardware and a drawer).

    Pallet Wood

Thanks! That's how they look, can imagine wood/resin getting trapped between ridges creating the impression of glue. Do wonder where the bit of copper wire comes from (and desperately hope there's not more of that buried in the nail holes......). Edit: Mystery solved, did a little googling on...

    Pallet Wood

Little cabinet from pallet wood is progressing nicely: Yesterday, I have resawn the "legs" of the pallet which were quartersawn, so after thicknessing, those will be the rear panels. And I think I am also going to use that as the drawer front. The nails came out pretty easily, but they were a...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

That bowtie looks great! Might have gone for a thinner top, or chamfered on the underside to give a bit more lightness, so it is more in line with the thickness of legs, but still, the top really has character, nice one!

    Shop made jigs and tools

Nice jig, I also like your knobs you posted earlier, pretty nifty use of ply. Also an engineer here, so I also wonder about the use of readouts which are to 1/100 of a millimeter. Accuracy is not the same as the number of digits in the readout, as you are saying, total achievable accuracy with a...

    Pallet Wood

As others have mentioned, not all pallets are created equal, we had a few here which looked like excellent timber, straight grained pine, saw them every day while entering and leaving the building. Ultimately took them apart and resawed the planks (avoided sections with nails obviously). But...

So, do most of you use sketch up for your designs?

Used to be design engineer, so I still have a laptop with 3d modeling software (Creo Parametric). It is fantastic for 3d, but utterly useless for 2d. At our company, we used to have AutoCad LT for the 2d things, but the bean counters decided we could do without it. Luckily I also have Adobe...

    Anyone tried DIY copper electroplating?

Would like to try nickel plating myself, as the lever caps of a few of my planes are in quite a sorry state.... I would definitely recommend not using batteries, it is quite a lengthy process, using batteries is not exactly sustainable. I a very clean supply is needed, one could have a look at a...

Collection of 3d printing files relevant for woodworking

Finally got a chance to print and test these pinch stick holders: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5515519 I used M4 inserts and knobs from Amazon Works really well. Did need to plane down the wood sticks. I used meranti 4x26mm, and planed it down to 4x22 (I thought that was a dimension I...

New Toy - Clifton no 4

That is a very nice plane! And yes, oh my god, that is a hunkin' big chunk of plane iron. :)

Collection of 3d printing files relevant for woodworking

Came across these: https://www.printables.com/model/164017-plane-till-cleats A collection of cleats to hold Bailey pattern planes to a wall to create a plane till. Pretty cool, printing a bunch of them now.

Collection of 3d printing files relevant for woodworking

Real hard to stay on topic or open a new topic to discuss international trade compliance tactics, apparently  Here's a length stop I did for a kumiko jig: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5505295 Quite a simple thing, but I think this works better in plastic than it does in thin wood.

Collection of 3d printing files relevant for woodworking

To hopefully pull this thread on topic again, printed the saw guide above this week, and also ordered the magnets https://www.amazon.nl/gp/product/B074C79DJS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Did a few tests yesterday, and that works really well! It does rock left to right a...

    Dovetail jigs

Usually sand them flush myself, but those dovetails look great! Am going to try that as well, really classy.

    Stupid injuries

Accidentally stabbed myself with a chisel this morning, when cutting dovetails for a small box. Always fix your work.... Bled like a pig, it's a big gash, put a bandaid on it to push it shut, but it is a mess. Hopefully it's closed enough tonight to allow some cleaning up.
