What are the basic 'dogs' I need for my new bench? Theres alot of choice!!

you could save a few quid by getting a set of long and short dogs, and some rail clips. However, then you doubt get the ability to make repeat cuts and when you want to upgrade you discard £40-50 quids worth of gear.

What are the basic 'dogs' I need for my new bench? Theres alot of choice!!

you are correct, there are endless options out there now. I would go with a bench dogs set, because the fence looks brilliant. the website doesn't, however and I find it hard work. Benchdogs seem to be an innovative company and they keep building on their systems. ideally, you would have the...

Myford ML8 and general turning questions.

I believe that the use of oil is to flush out any rubbish from the bearings. Now, depending on the oil nipple, you may need to get a special oiler. I have just had to get one myself for a vintage tractor, and it was described as the same as for a Myford lathe. If so, it is made by wanner and is...

Time to pack it all in....

I should add that I would far rather have to wait for good trades people than to see them fold. I really do hope that people are managing to keep going.

Time to pack it all in....

The few trades that I have spoken to since the start are struggling to fit the work in. Bathroom fitter, fencing contractor/landscaper, boiler engineer. All small businesses with a backlog of work. Have things changed as the pandemic has progressed, even last week I have struggled to get hold of...

    Moore and Wright combination square

I quite often use the centre finder for turning. It is one of those parts that I am glad I got in the set because I imagine it would be expensive to add afterwards, and the set itself was justified with the rest of the parts in it. Mine is starrett. When I bought it I looked at the main few...

I had to Google that but could be an interesting addition to the fire pit I am converting the old.bbq into.

Method to cut a shallow detail

Are the dimensions critical? I think that I would probably do the cut out with a coping saw/fret saw and stick a piece of veneer to the underneath. Glue the centre block to it. Is 5mm ply available, I don't buy much but it doesn't sound familiar. Probably something near though. I may even be...

    Myford ML8 worn thread

It sounds odd that the thread has worn that much. I have seen the lathes of pros who have used them all day every day for years and that thread doesn't wear out. Could you simply have the wrong sized faceplate?

Could there also be double grub screws fitted, although the burr sounds more likely.

Stanley Factory Closes After 25 Years

Or has the factory developed their skills sufficiently to be able to manufacture more premium products and have priced themself out of the entry level part of the market. You wouldn't pay an experienced restaurant chef to cook at KFC, nor would I get Dr Bob to pop round and fit a kitchen in...

Workbench / Assembly Table (mostly power tool use, particularly Festool Domino use)

Custard Could you expand on your vice setup? I have seen various discussions about insetting the rear jaw so that it is flush with the front rail, or not doing so for ease of fitting. Yours is set well back which I am sure is not accidental, and I wondered what your reasoning was. Thanks

Stanley Factory Closes After 25 Years

China certainly isn't the universally cheap manufacturing location that it once was. People think that the factories only churn out rubbish for peanuts, which in some cases is true, but there are some high quality items and these are charged accordingly. You get what you pay for, and if you want...
