really, I have several older Axminster white machines, aimed at professionals (I am not) and I have found them to be solid machines?

Hobby packs - good value ?

I like British Hardwoods and their stock is good quality and fairly priced. I am local so would have a drive over and pic what I want. I would avoid the hobby packs. If you have 1|" or 2" boards, you can plan accordingly. With a mixed bag of all sorts, it is a load of offcuts that you cannot do...

Full answer, I have no idea. I didn't know that ditch elm killed anything other than elms though. My guess would be the same as yours.

    What to do.........

you have plenty of glue surface, so neither are necessary for that purpose. They will help for alignment. I would use the biscuits.

Resharpenable saws or throw away saws?

Depends on intended use really. The Spear and Jackson Predator hardpoints are v good for the £7 they cost. They leave a reasonable cut, particularly the second cut one. A saw cut isn't my finished surface. I would keep a first and second fix hardpoint in my arsenal even with a fleet of...

Planer/Jointer vs Thicknesser, which one should I buy first?

Something like this. https://machineatlas.com/machines/elektra-beckum-hc260/ Various brands did a version- record power, EB, DeWalt, metabo etc. I would steer clear of any benchtop models because you will outgrow them very quickly. If it was a choice between a cheap benchtop planer or...

Planer/Jointer vs Thicknesser, which one should I buy first?

Have you ruled out the combined planer thicknesser? It will give you more choice too, standalone machines are less in number than the combis. Of the two, I would go for the thicknesser. It is less work to knock the high spots off with a hand plane and get it fairly flat than to reduce the...

    Woodlathe for bench use

I would have a look at the Axminster 1416vs. Do ask for feedback from users, because I haven't used it but it would be on my shortlist. used, it should be within budget. it may have been renamed and available new, but I imagine that will be a chunk more than what you are looking at.
