    Random Orbital Sander

I am using the mirka padsaver with a metabo. Hole pattern is fine on mine. It has some extra holes in but the 8 or so in the sander. When I got the sander, I didn't use a padsaver and I did use abranet. As a result over time the pad itself stopped gripping so I had to but a replacement. At the...

    Fence covering

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though, and the OP doesn't like it! I think that the wire and post framework is a good idea though, at least for part of it.

    Random Orbital Sander

That is the one I use. Cheaper than I remembered but I knew it was priced as a consumable. My actual pads are cheaper than the Bosch from memory, nearer £20 but I would still use this as a default because £20 is £20. If you are carefully doing edges, you can always remove the saver temporarily...

    Peanut Connecting System

I would think that most uses will be assembly and disassembly in a workshop, then reassembly on site. The majority would probably not need to be disassembled beyond that.

    Fence covering

how? if it is your fence, then the posts would be fully in your garden, and the boards on the boundary line. it cant obstruct anything in his garden which is part of the reasoning behind the "correct" way.

Workbench top from square lumber (100x100 mm)

If you are planning on building a bench, people worry too much about these things. As long as it is solid, design it around what timber you have or can get easily. Chris schwarz recommended southern yellow pine in one of his books because he could buy it from his local home depot. A few years...

Workbench top from square lumber (100x100 mm)

I would suggest that something for power tools probably doesn't need to be quite as heavy duty. I asked because if the OP had said that it is predominantly for power tool usage then 4" thick might be overkill. The other key difference tends to be height because for hand planing you want to get...

Workbench top from square lumber (100x100 mm)

A very valid point, it isn't a forever bench. The second one will be more suited to exactly what you like and/or need. @# a beginner you have to guess at what might work for you.

Workbench top from square lumber (100x100 mm)

For handtools, I would say go for it if you have the 4" stock readily available. If not, work around what you can get. If you plan to use holdfasts, you may need to counterbore any dogholes. They are designed to work on thinner tops, probably 2" +/-1/2"

    Random Orbital Sander

You probably need to buy the new pad. When you do, get a pad saver to go with it. I got mine from rest express I think. Sooner or later you are going to have to but you could glue the saver to it as a last time. You could possibly glue the pad saver to your current pad. It isn't a solution...

Pretty miffed at the (lack of) response

In fairness, he has said thanks now and offered future assistance. He did offer to pay for the postage. Maybe life just got in the way of logging on instantly to confirm receipt. Give him the benefit of the doubt. I have plenty of jobs where I think that I must do that when I get a chance and...

    Best dovetail saws?

I would suggest that you do below £66.84 and above. The veritas used to get a lot of recommendations on here Veritas Dovetail Saw 230mm x 14tpi I have never used it but it is a decent benchmark for you. The negatives were aesthetic, although I actually quite like it. vintage and learn to...

    Crown tools?

I have a couple bought at a show. Although they possibly sell direct, I think it is an old fashioned manufacturers website and direct sales were an afterthought. At the show, the lady looked through the printed version of the website and filled in a form for 1 thing that they didn't have on the...

1/4 sheet palm sander or random orbit sander?

and that is the biggest downside of the Lidl stuff. I would probably spend the extra bit and go for the screw fix although I haven't used any Erbauer stuff before. I would probably order it click and collect from her local branch too.

1/4 sheet palm sander or random orbit sander?

dunno, I dont disagree with you. for me personally I expect my ROS to be used on most jobs (as a hobbyist) and to last for 10+ years. I am in it for the long run and what I buy either replaces or supplements what I have. I am not needing to buy multiple things. For this project you could soon...

    Peanut Connecting System

interesting, particularly the future mini version. I have no need at the moment, but I can see a time when my daughter buys a house and needs furniture building making here and assembling miles away.

    Reamer

yes, it is an option and may be the easiest one (that I hadn't considered before this thread). the pin that is going through it needs hardening though, so in part it is a practice run of the process for that.
