    Either an angled base or a way to hold the workpiece at an angle. You could make a router table- it doesn't need to be anything more than the router fixed to a piece of wood with a hole in and a fence screwed to it.

    I heard a tale on the radio that certain airlines aren't accepting any test that you do yourself, so it is another thing to be ware of. That was a Portuguese airline I think, I caught the end of it on radio 4 one lunchtime.

    cant help with this, but have you seen the sorry modular system? they do a range of sizes, and an internal and external rest. not sure that they do an s shape though

    The effect may have been done with an adze rather than a plane (on the table). I know that Robert Thompsons current workshop do it that way, but size of workpiece is probably relevent to the method.

    At least one piece looks like cherry to me from the bark. Lighter in colour than I would expect, but it happens.

    I think I would be guided by what you can get easily. I can't get larch or chestnut easily here. Iroko, probably but have never tried. Oak is readily available.

    I disagree about ikea, it is very well designed and fit for purpose. it isnt fine furniture and doesn't claim to be.
