2020 Secret Santa ......and we're off!

For my secret Santa I received a box of usefulness. Unfortunately, Santa was anonymous so I cannot say thank you properly, but I am very grateful. I got a handy tape measure to keep in my pocket at all times, a set of mitre clamps and an extension lead that I haven't seen the likes of before...

    Strange Food Habits

I like mints, chewing gum, toothpaste, mint the herb. Cannot stand mint chocolate or mint ice cream. They are 2 of the main things I won't eat. The 3rd is vine leaves but I don't think I have had those prepared well the once I tried them. I do draw the line at some of the Asian delicacies like...

What wood to use for Paul sellers workbench

I haven't seen it. I think for a work bench I would rather spend the 40-50 odd quid that a couple of sheets of 12 or 18mm ply costs on some timber- whether that be reclaimed, or softwood or whatever. For an assembly bench or a portable bench then the sheet material might be fine. It all depends...

    Game Changing Tools

Interesting video from @petermillard today about game changing tools. I have the track saw and would say that it alone has made a huge difference to my woodworking- particularly DIY tasks (which form most of my tasks). Of all the tools that you have, what are your "game changers"? The track...

What wood to use for Paul sellers workbench

hi Sam Welcome to the forum. Where in Leeds are you? You are correct in that there are not too many places around. I would avoid Wickes, B&Q and Homebase. For hardwoods, I would go to British Hardwoods near Keighley and for other stuff, Arnold Laver are reasonable. Check the prices though...

    Axminster price increasing

it depends what you want to buy. record power or Charnwood are probably similar for the hobby machines. There are others. Best option would be to start a thread saying what axi product you are looking at and ask for opinions.

    Fixing for box lining

Now you have the shellac, keep practicing on some scrap. Either brush on or pad on but 20 mins a day for a couple of weeks and you will soon improve. A decent brush will help, traditionally squirrel I think. The result in the photos looks good though

    thick old varnish- removal

My mother presented me with a slice of wood (cedar I think) and asked me to put the house number on it. It is cut on the 45 degrees, and is 30-40 years old so no stability concerns. It has some vague sentimental value so I need to use it, but if I were making one from scratch, I would use a...
