Another Mystery Tool Adze ? This time

Interesting - never seen such. Does look like it must be an adze - the thin blade and flat back suggest for final flattening - almost to a smooth plane surface - you'll have to handle, sharpen and try it out.

now, now Phil, keep it clean -- just because you're from Shaft City - hope your kitten is closing its ears

    Rededa No. 2

When you get ready to fit it's not difficult to mark the position of those 'webs' and then make a couple of closely spaced angled saw cuts for each side, knock out the waste with chisel or similar - doesn't need to be fine cabinetwork as all will be hidden. Fine Sheffield-made vice approx 1930s...

    Sold King wood Blanks

I also have some, what I believe to be kingwood - given to me by his family after the death at 101 of a neighbour cabinet/casemaker - long poles, hard, chocolate/reddish brown with blackish grain lines, way denser than water, also maybe 50mm square and round, 1.5m long, very similar look to...

    Workbench vice

You couldn't do better than a Parky, especially the older ones if not too worn.

How do you store your rasps and files?

I tried that first, she's usually placid except when playing tigers or mouse/rat catching,, but when faced with putting her head in a plastic tunnel she resisted so much she knocked off the cover and the batteries went flying.

How do you store your rasps and files?

Me too, and don't have trouble with files blunting, however the rammel's now in a right mess. Even so - a nicely organised display of files (maybe without the gothick fol-de-rols) would be good for quick access of the best for the job - definitely not all expensive new hand-stitched as...

    Mystery tool.

I have very similar, I think it's a kind of bradawl for starting holes for screws, but doesn't seem to work better than the other shapes. Could maybe be Good for someting like a brass screw into hardwood where some go to the extent of first putting in a steel screw, taking it out then the...

    Welding tent?

30+ years ago I was trying to persuade a large Derby eng co that there was another way than welding to put stellite valve seats into some key valves for subs. Turned out there were two reasons they were keen 1. As often happens, it cost much more to annually retrain and recertify the only...

Marking hand tools. How and why?

Had a Chalco mark made - very finely done using a modern technique, but not as deeply cut as trad, so on some woods less clear. NB do a trial in similar to see how hard you should hit, one strike, and not really necessary to mark multiple times, as many did. Then I was lucky scrabbling in a...

    LIOGIER rasps......etc......

nice. and great that these are still made in France (and Portugal?). I haven't shelled out for these fine looking things, but do have some old Sheffield hand stitched cabinet makers rasps - there seem to be some available in the flea mkt boxes of 'old files' inc some v worn, but quite a few...

    Replacement handle for old chisel

Agree or even a section of broken spade or even better large hammer/pick handle of hickory or ash a bit of a chisel/knife trim and rasp/file, sand if you wish and you have a mortice handle - I've done this more than once, and used but good pstickers often have a similar replacement.

The Warrington Chest. Patternmakers Tool Chest and Tools 1888.

It's a while since I visited Portsmouth, but the tool chest resource that should be explored is the collection of chests there in the naval museum area - I believe that in the days of the wooden ships and even later, there were so many workers in wood that there was a large store building just...

Getting an Old Pigsticker Ready for Work

I've not followed all the dialogue above (I think only two correspondents (nice word) have done that). But why did I suddenly think of Harry Enfield and 'you don't want to do it like that'? Oh, and see thread title, poor Paul's still not got his chisel ready

    Best vintage Chisels

I have one similar (but the handle is just a micropigsticker style) definitely (well-)made of old machine hacksaw blade I have actually found it quite useful on occasion, eg the wedge didn't fit well on an old woody plane and it cleaned the corner edge of the wedge groove better than alternatives.

    Atkinson saw ID

You're right orra that it's a changeable blade handle with typical lever nut, sold for diy - sometimes called a 'nest of saws', and would have a few more blades as sold but 1275 is correct that the blade fitted is not one of the usual set/nest. I can't actually see the second row of teeth, but...

Getting an Old Pigsticker Ready for Work

I think Paul's chisel's getting rusty, will he ever ask for advice again?
