    Name stamp maker?

chalco fine people and good to support, but not quite the same as the old hand cut, if you have a common name and are patient look on the web for used stamps - you may well have to grind off the initial - I waited then two came along - one with wife's, one with brother's initial, so didn't grind...

    Woodhead vices

Here's an entry in an 1863 directory. (founded 1847) This company moved over to making springs and then shock absorbers (for rail, later road) by 1890 and moved to Leeds in 1892 - became the v big Monroe-Woodhead, supplying Jag and others

    Woodhead vices

In the right corner we have the two heavyweights from Bradford, born 1850, Woodheads 1 and 2, Lion weighing in at 65lbs and wheel at 70lbs. The young challengers, born 1910, are the Hampton tag team of Record 53 and Woden, each at under 40lbs, but maybe faster on their feet, we'll see.

    name that vice

Yeah - I've tried one of those Entwhistle & Kenyon vices - great - but the earlier (patented 1877 a few days before the E&K) Syers doesn't have a separate rack cam to get lost, so I went with that - been installed and used on my bench for the last 8 years-- even greater vice. So I tried and...

    Brass infill mallet?

I have a couple - no makers names - guessing pre WWI replacement faces on one of mine not as easy as looks because the boxwood infill goes right thru and the handle thru that - this stopped me investigating the other however they do look good clogs - your avatar is the Studley tool box -...

    Marples blue handled Sculpture tools?

I have a set (from when sold off as discontinued - about 1980?) - they're significantly more heavy duty than usual marples or other carving tools - intended for H Moore/B Hepworth scale of sculpture, rather than detail. -- seem to be good steel. One day i put wood handles on em - but the 'blue...

    Marking Knives

note that there are many kinds of hacksaw blade - most could, at a stretch, be used, but some of the more high tech ones with just a strip of HSS at the tooth would be difficult to get right - probably best of all a really old all plain carbon steel blade, but my hacksaw blade knives are from...

    Maker identification

That's what I was thinking, but I think the marking says guss stahl, ie crucible-type cast steel. I know that Goldenberg had German connections and their main plant was in a part German-speaking area of France, but surprising to me that they mark it like this,in German, not acier fondu or other...

    rosewood tray charity shop find

Thanks and info from ttrees - interesting to know not rare - I also measured the pieces I have - plenty long enough (well over 1m, but just a wee bit too narrow for a 6 string instrument neck/board). (scource - a neighbouring cutlery case-maker) who saved interesting wood from his job - these...

    rosewood tray charity shop find

Talking of rare wood - an even rarer one - king-wood (very dense) - is this of any interest to guitar makers? (or maybe just a v heavy skateboard?)

Anyone tried Abodo heat treated wood ?

remembered the name - 'lignostone' - special applications, invented 1915, germany, still made for some interesting applications, can even make surprisingly strong wooden nuts&bolts - I met it first as a material for hammer/mallet heads I also have a sample of another maker's equivalent which was...

    Boxwood woes

I can see the point of trying to use end grain for wear - but looks a v diff thing to get right. Have you examined 'boxed' planes? - looking at one I have it's long grain, not slivers of end grain. Anyone else know more? (your wood doesn't look anything like box to me) here's a suggestion -...

Anyone tried Abodo heat treated wood ?

there's also heat+pressure treatment of already dry timber - again Nordic/Scandi developed - more pricey, I guess and about 40 years ago an English/French heat+pressure+resin thick ply was used for pattern-making and for hammer heads (Thor UK had such)- start out with birch but finish very...

Is this wood any use for making ?. turning ? (I have heard that palm may not be kind to...
