    Sawn green oak tolerances

Darren The braces are coming out of 200 x 75 sections, but I'm planning to build a set of steps in the garden as well, so I can probably use it for them. My query to the forum is really what my expectations should be when I buy green oak cut to order. I've bought plenty of kiln dried hardwood...

    Sawn green oak tolerances

I am starting a project to build a pergola (from scratch - not a kit) using green oak, which I've not used before. The timber has arrived and going through it I have determined that the dimensions of the 4.8m lengths I ordered at 150 x 75 actually vary between 69mm and 81mm on the width and...

    Lets talk lawn mowers.

Artie I've had a Stiga Park Royal (very similar to the Husqvarna) with 122cm triple deck for 20 years. Brilliant machine, but if I was to buy a new one it would be the 4WD version. Reversing up anything more than a few degrees of incline with my 2WD and the driving wheels slip on the grass...

    Lets talk lawn mowers.

I have to say that my 30 hp Shire 330c has been very good to date (I'm touching wood) and has never baulked at a full a days work. I bought it new, but Shire went out of business, so getting anybody to service it could be a bit problematic. However, I'm pretty sure the basic machine is a Jinma...

    Lets talk lawn mowers.

Fair comment Clogs I guess I'll have to stick with my 20 year old Stiga Park and 30 hp Chinese tractor with a collecting flail on the back. But I can dream......

    But I still want one!

    Lets talk lawn mowers.

Let's see now. 16m wide on a roughly square 1/4 acre paddock (35 yds x 35 yds) I work out to 2 passes in each direction at 90 degrees to each other. Of course the turns could be interesting, and a place to park it!

    Lets talk lawn mowers.

We have a 2 acre paddock and for 20 years kept 4 sheep on it. They did keep the grass down but . ...... They need regular worming and "dipping" (the latter is more putting a chemical on the fleece these days) Their feet need regular trimming and treating for rot. Their rear ends need...

    Best way to ease edges?

I use a 1/4" palm router and Axminster 1/16" Ovolo cutter with a flush bearing. Axcaliber Ovolo/Roundover Cutters I find it gives just enough roundover to maintain a square edge look and gives a consistent finish when going round corners with a larger radius.

    Mini CNC machine

I bought a Banggood 3018 last year with the intention of engraving personalised elements of my wooden pieces. Things like "Happy birthday Joe Bloggs" on the lid of a box. I also dreamed of making some of the chopping boards like Broinwood makes ........ have a look at some of his YouTube posts...

    Your opinion about logos.

This is an innovative product that you are taking to market. As such your best sales tool is people using it and other people seeing it in use. For that to work you will need the prospective customer to know where to get one, as you can't rely on the user remembering where they got it! Hence...

    Small Workshop Vacuum

If you go for a shop vac, I find the power tool socket really useful. I invariably use it set so that the shop vac comes on when you start the tool plugged into it. Keeps the noise down as well. Not all machines have this. I have a cyclone connected and has dramatically reduced the need to...

What do you filter your paint with and into?

Paper strainers and Sainsbury's soup pots (the wife likes the soup). These are OK with cellulose thinners (they don't disintegrate) and can be re-sealed if you have any thinned or mixed paint/lacquer over. The wife eats a lot of soup, so I also use these for old paint where the tin has...

    Any advice on MDF variants?

If it's any use, I get all my MRMDF from Vexgold at Thurmaston, LE4 8BB. It's pretty much all they sell. They certainly have Medite, though I don't ask for it by name. Whatever the brand I've been getting, it's definitely good stuff. I have noticed that sometimes it is all green and other...

    Rutland chuck

I used ordinary rubber feet screwed in upside down. I also use a cone of softwood mounted on a live centre to keep light pressure on the piece for as long as I can. Hope this helps. John

    Drawer slides

If you are using mechanical runners, they need the drawer to be narrower than the opening (usually by 12mm each side) to allow the runner to pass through the opening with the drawer. If the drawer front is separate from the drawer tray and sits inside the cabinet frame (so the drawer front and...

    Method of joining simple bookcase

Coming back to the 900mm wide bookcase, for a painted finish MDF (Moisture Resistant preferably) will do a good job provided the shelves are braced. For me 22mm is overkill. If it is yet to be bought, 18mm will be fine. To cover the edges I use Tulip/Poplar fixed with biscuits or a loose...

What blade sits on your table saw on a daily basis?

I get mine sharpened at Oswald Cox in Leicester. Their collection and delivery service comes out as far as Syston for sure, but I don't know how much further?

Advice needed for insulating a concrete floor

I should have another look at the cost of running electric underfloor heating as the primary heat source. I have installed it in a bathroom and it really is just for making the floor warm to walk on when the bathroom is in use. If you have a combi boiler upstairs you can access, it may be...
