    Putin is a loser

Perhaps you'd care to share your knowledge of the true nature of the two and the essential differences between them? Clearly there are those among us, including yours truly, who are in need of some crumbs of enlightenment.

    Ikea Kallax for storage

I've got 2 workbenches which are made of Kallax topped with 20mm construction ply (the waterproof type with smooth plastic on both sides). They can take anything I've thrown at them, including my not-inconsiderable bulk climbing on top. They're on metal legs and the "cubbyholes" have doors or...

But can you at least remember not to mention Ze Vor? 💣

If you can still remember your German, then it probably wasn't a waste of time. How useful Ancient Greek might have been is another question, apart from deciphering scientific neologisms or the odd philosophical tenet.

I use my Latin pretty much every day, explaining to my students how useful it is when deciphering unfamiliar words they might encounter in their English studies. I do admit to some googling to supplement my failing memory though....

I'd certainly agree with your final point: at the risk of yet again attracting the ire of the "No politics here" zealots, one single word will suffice - Johnson. The rest of your comment is untrue, in my experience; my wife, a university professor, concurs - she despairs at the poor educational...

According to Wikipedia, it was simply "Pass" or "Fail" until 1975. To the best of my recollection, that's nonsense: I well remember my university choices in 1967 being contingent on getting at least 2 A and one B grades at A-levels, and my O-level exams a couple of years prior were also graded...

The problem with linguistic laxity is that there are people who take advantage of it to mislead or cheat others; in addition, a cavalier attitude to punctuation is often associated with the use of incorrect vocabulary. The whole point of language is to enable us to communicate in a way which...

Self-righteous is hyphenated - at least until the people I described get round to "fixing" hyphens. Humanity started out communicating via grunts, and it seems that we're well on the way back to those origins.

I'm not really sure why you quoted my post, your "reply" had little, if any, relevance to what I wrote. "Silliness" is in the eye of the beholder: you may see nothing untoward in the idea of leaving your language to the tender mercies of people who demonstrate how fickle they are by habitually...

And how would you define the difference between "verbal" and "written" in this context? ;) You're right about "people decide the common usage of language" nowadays but you'd have to concede that "common usage" often includes egregious grammatical and logical errors. Should we allow the tyranny...

    Opinions, please

Hummus isn't all that popular here, but I get where you're coming from :) I'm intending to oil/varnish the door, so there won't be much scope for hiding imperfections under a coat or two of paint. He uses "prime Scots pine" but where he sources it is anyone's guess since most of the pine...

Not just on show - these are displayed as advertisements to show potential customers for his doors the quality of his workmanship.....

    Opinions, please

Living as I do in the depths of The Wild East, I'm rather out of touch with the quality of work on offer from UK door-makers. A new woodworker has popped up on the radar here, making traditional UK doors from Scots Pine. He's showing some photos of his work and I'm interested to have some...

How are you storing your tools?

I like the idea of French cleats, but I prefer something a little more flexible, ie that I can use magnets on or hang a metal hook (or ten) from etc. That led me to do some experimenting and I came up with the idea of using the "Metod" suspension rails from Ikea, which are designed to hang...

A little truth for a change.

Not a privilege? Not a society? Not democratic?

A little truth for a change.

By its very nature, Democracy is ALWAYS manipulated. Perhaps we should go back to first principles: only men (and only those men rich enough to have the spare time to attend debates and participate in voting) are franchised, while the slaves and women get on with whatever work is needed to keep...

A little truth for a change.

So presumably you also favour people being forced to pay a similar tax because the government they elected - (or perhaps simply supported in principle without voting?) - made a hash of the economy/infringed your "rights"/put up your taxes or injured/offended you in some other way? Do you...
