Margaret Garrard demo at Northumbrian Woodturners this Sat

Just trying to be helpful, but Margaret's name is Gerrard not Garrard. I think Garrard got started owing to a misprint somewhere else. :) Bob

    Harrogate the Great Yorkshire Showground.

Hi all, I've followed this thread with interest, and can see some of the points being made. While newcomers were impressed and enjoyed it, the general feeling amongst those who have been before is 'same old stuff, nothing new' and to some extent I have to agree. However, although this might...

    Bowl Gouges

Hello again, Almost as soon as I'd written the previous post I came upon this: http://www.woodturningdesign.com/askdale/18/18.shtml I haven't read it all, but I assume Dale Nish knows what he's talking about! Bob

    Bowl Gouges

Hi Big Chief, Johnny B has said it all I think. I'd only re-emphasize his advice on sharp tools and getting the correct angle - which comes with experimentation and practice. Bob

    Bowl Gouges

I agree with Robo Hippy - we must do things differently from the guy in the video. There are a few things I disagree with the video about, but just to mention two: The size of the spigot (tenon) to hold the bowl in the chuck is determined by the size of the chuck. The size of the foot of a bowl...

    Is it legal?????

After they had cut some yew trees in a local cemetary, I rang the council and asked if I could take some of the wood. They were only too glad to let me as the more I took away, the less they had to. It will almost certainly be the highways department or the parks department that you need to...

    record power

Steve, can you persuade the original owner to report the faulty motor (since, presumably, the guarantee still applies for him) and then give you the replacement? Just a thought. Bob

    vacuum chucking system home made

Hi Mike, I've been asked that question often. The truth is that my lathe has a hole through the spindle so I don't have the problem and so I've never bothered to solve it. However, I have thought about it and I think I've worked out how it could be done. I've put the idea on my website...

Spot on Chris. Edwards is a very reputable brand and one of the leaders in vacuum pumps in Britain. That's a very useful eBay link. Bob

Thanks for the advert, Blister. It was a fairly straightforward job and still works as well as the day I finished making it. Bob

    Bowls with a faceplate

Hi Richard, Chas is right, but I wonder if you mean how do I create the pdf file in the first place. I use a free program called 'PrimoPDF' which you'll find on t'internet if you do a search for it. It installs like a printer so if I create a document in Word, say, I can 'print' it to PrimoPDF...

    Workshop Tour:

Hi Scrums, one of your pictures shows the kiln. Can you say how you made it (briefly) and how effective it is? I've thought about making one but never got round to it. Bob

    Bowls with a faceplate

If you have a look at my website, on the page 'For Woodturners', there is an article (called 'Bowls on a Budget) explaining how to make a bowl, and finish the bottom, using nothing more complicated than a faceplate, a tailstock centre and bit of scrap timber. I hope this may be of some help. Bob

    Anyone make Peppermills for Sale?

Chris, I'm sorry, I didn't mean that at all. It's just that I think it a shame when I see good turners selling themselves short because they think they have to be cheap to sell anything at all. I see people in my club who produce excellent stuff but can't be convinced that it is excellent! You...

    Labour of love?

Not so sure about that - looks more like an accident waiting to happen. I wouldn't want it in my workshop. Bob

    Anyone make Peppermills for Sale?

Hi Chris, If your work is good then don't undervalue it. People will value it at the price you put on it, so don't undersell yourself. Putting cheap mechanisms into peppermills and selling them at knock down prices is asking to have your work judged as rubbish. I'm with Duncan on this one. Do...

Rotating objects and the use of woven materials.

Hi Chas, I've only just seen your advice, but agree with you totally. I used to have a teacher who would tell us to 'mark, read, learn and inwardly digest' anything he considered important. I think it definitely applies to your posting. Bob
