    I had a visitor.....

Well done, Johnny. It was my wife, speaking to a shopkeeper, that got the first pieces of my work displayed and sold. The craft fairs came much later, and the galleries later still. I think our wives are sometimes willing to 'push' on our behalf when we ourselves have too much self-doubt to do...

Bet you find the original as soon as the replacement arrives   Bob

    End grain problems

Steve, I think you said somewhere that you've not been turning very long. If its not too late, get it back out of the bin and save it till this time next year or even the year after. If you still can't get a better finish, bin it then. Bob

An Alternative to the 'expensive' one .. (FTAO :LOZ etc)

I've just acquired a Tormek SuperGring 2000 and several jigs, including the gouge jig, at a price I couldn't refuse. Remembering what I'd already said in this thread, I thought I'd better come clean and admit it! I haven't used it yet, and may decide not to keep it, but I'm going to give it a...

    Power Sanding Pads

The thing I like best about the Skilton pads is the fact that they have 6mm hexagonal shanks, although the latest ones I got from Axminster had 8mm shanks and I had to send them back. Does anyone know any other (i.e. cheaper) make which has hexagon shanks? Bob

    Oak bowl-Piccy question.

Hi Paul, It's taken me a long time to learn how to take a reasonable picture with my digital camera. I'm certainly no expert but this is how I do it: First use a plain uncluttered background somewhere reasonably well lit by natural light if possible. Put the camera on a tripod - absolutely...

    Kids work from school (Pics)

I know where these comments are coming from and I agree with what's been said - about 80% worth. The other 20% asks how many kids there are in Rich's school, and are there any guarantees that there is not at least one of them who acts like a maniac and doesn't give a toss for his own safety or...

    Wood identification

Are those speckled bits on the end a greenish colour? I once had a piece of holly with that effect and the bark looks a little like holly, and the wood is very white like holly, so my money's on.........holly! But with my luck on the premium bonds, no doubt it's something else. Bob

    nut and bolt in boxwood

That is absolutely marvellous! I've seen the one made by Allan Batty at a demo he was doing years ago. This looks great. If I remember correctly Allan's was actually a box and the top of the bolt screwed off the shank, but it was a long time ago and I may be wrong. Well done again, I'm very...

    Turning with an engineering lathe

I have a small metalworking lathe and have used it in the past for turning perfectly parallel sided dowels in a very wide range of woods. I used a horizontal scraper (one of my woodturning ones, held in the toolpost) at centre height. Remove the burr on the scraper first by rubbing it upside...

Homemade nylon rings for reverse chucking boxes.

That's a brilliant idea and very simple. Have you thought of approaching a manufacturer? It's the sort of thing I'd buy ready made if it wasn't too expensive. Bob

An Alternative to the 'expensive' one .. (FTAO :LOZ etc)

Hi Crazy, it's a fine grained wheel so I guess it's 80 grit if 40 and 80 are the only two alternatives, but it gives a finer surface than a 100 grit white wheel I also have. I bought it some years ago from Mick O'Donnell when he had a stand at one of the Harrogate shows, but I've not seen him...

An Alternative to the 'expensive' one .. (FTAO :LOZ etc)

Like Tam, I'm not sure a Tormek (or lookalike) is really necessary for sharpening my turning tools. I've actually had a couple of Tormeks through my hands and sold them on after trying them out. I think they are wonderful for plane blades and straight edged chisels, but I didn't find them all...

    Naerok bandsaw

Thanks all, I've ordered the replacement belt from the link that Chas has mentioned above. I spoke to a very helpful chap called Tony Griffiths who said he gets about four requests a week for these Naerok belts. He also said he could supply any kind of drive belt, so there you are - he...

    Naerok bandsaw

A little while ago one of my neighbours gave me a Naerok bandsaw which had belonged to her late husband. Its a three wheel machine and although I can see it's not the highest quality, it has been useful for small light cuts and I've used it a few times for demonstrations because the machine is...

    Spindle help for a numpty

I've seen that cut before but never tried it. Looking at the clip again, he begins in the centre, with the gouge on its side (flute to the right), and then moves it vertically upwards and out to the rim. Now imagine everything except the tool rest rotated 90 degrees anticlockwise: wouldn't you...

    What Camera

This has nothing to do with the topic but Boysie, that tagline of yours always makes me chuckle. I understand it totally until I try to understand it! It's a bit like 'one of his legs is both the same'. Sorry for the diversion, now back to the subject... Bob

    Patriot chuck not running true

Hi Paul, Hi Steve, Hi all, I didn't know about the problems with the patriot chuck, but I recently bought a couple of chucks from Craft Supplies which had M33 x 3.5 direct threads. I can't say about the Nova but they fit my Vicmarc perfectly and were a good price too. Paul, was it you that...

    Todays turning

Hi Johnny, I think the shape of the hollow form is just right and shows off the wood beautifully, but agree with George that the finial just isn't quite right. It's difficult to discuss something like this without drawing diagrams and talking face to face, but it's not simply the proportions in...

best wood for a mortar and pestle

I once made one with a piece of corian set in the base of the mortar and another piece forming the end of the pestle. The idea was that these would provide hard surfaces where the crushing happened. I tried it with a few peppercorns and then sold it so I don't know how it stood up to the test of...
