Safe way to use a dado stack

Sorry to reveal my ignorance, but what is a 'dado stack'?

    Cut off/scrap fever

This is a genuine question so please don't think I'm making any kind of statement about emissions from woodburners. I imagine that the glues used in MDF, chipboard and plywood are some sort of carbon based compound, so when they burn would produce the same sort of emissions as the wood itself...

You know the world is moving fast when....

My computer sits safely on my desk at home. My phone is carried around with me (when I remember to put it in my pocket). The chances of losing or damaging my computer is negligible. There is also a very small (I hope!) risk of it being stolen. Not so for my phone though. It stands a much greater...

    Heating the workshop

I agree with the advice given by Bowmaster and hope he will not be offended by one small, but potentially vital, correction. In his post he mentions flammable and inflammable materials in contexts which make it clear that he thinks these two words are opposites - flammable = burns, inflammable =...

Fun with a Clarke lathe, sort of

The answer is in your post: You had just turned off the lathe. The spindle stopped rotating but the weight of the chuck and whatever was in it caused it to continue rotating and this is what unscrewed it. Possibly tightening it more onto the spindle may have helped but the real problem is that...

    Road Tax rates

As Andy T says it's not a road tax - although many people, myself included, call it that. However words matter. They convey meaning and the wrong words may convey the wrong meaning. No matter how many of us call it a 'road' tax, the fact remains that it isn't. In order to drive a motor vehicle...

    Working out lathe speeds?

When I was demonstrating I always used to say that there are only three lathe speeds. One is 'too fast' by which I meant that the work was vibrating, the lathe was wobbling or simply that the whirring sound was making me feel scared. The second speed was 'too slow', the wood wasn't cutting...

    Streaks

These look like medulary rays which look like thin pale lines in end grain oak and wider irregular patterns on side grain. They are a natural feature of the wood and cannot be removed by sanding etc. they are very prominent in oak and are one of the features used to identify oak. Your finish...

    Using Pewter

When silver coloured metals are sanded the fine dust almost always looks black or dark grey rather than silver. I agree with Phil above that it is unlikely to be a reaction with either copper or tin which are both very unreactive metals and will resist attack by acids (hence use of tin coating...

New wood turner - just got a DML 24x

The centres in phil.p's link look similar to genuine stebcentres but don't look as well made. I've never used one of these and can't say how they perform. They are certainly cheaper than genuine stebs but...maybe you get what you pay for?

New wood turner - just got a DML 24x

I would highly recommend a Stebcentre as a replacement for the four prong drive. It is a very forgiving drive centre and ideal for a new turner.

    wtl12 lathe Bed bar converter

From the instructions supplied by mayo.mick it looks like you could leave out the first bed bar and use only the second one. Fasten it to the headstock just as you would fasten the first bar. If you do, don't forget to put the tool post and tailstock onto the bar before you fasten it all together.

    wtl12 lathe Bed bar converter

Hi Billy Can you remove the end fitting from the end of the second bar and fit it to the end of the first bar when you separate them?

    Chucking Recesses

Well, I think I'm going to stick my neck out here and put my fourpenneth in. Pete (Bodrighy) amazes me! Removing a spigot or chucking recess is snobbery? Sorry Pete but you're well out of order on that one. This is the same sort of snobbery that makes me sand until all evidence of toolmarks is...

Help wanted! Belt change on union jubilee.

I had a Union Jubilee and put new bearings in it. They made a terrible noise afterwards and I found that I had to tap the shaft gently backwards and forwards until I found the 'quiet' position where presumably everything is aligned correctly. Just for info :) . Bob

    Fruit WIP

Hi Richard, It's always interesting to see how others do things and it's almost always different to the way I do them myself ('cos, obviously, I must do it wrong most of the time  ), BUT I am stunned and amazed to find that I make apples exactly the same way you do :D ! Super set of...

    Modifications to tailstock ?

I've had the same problem of morse tapers not seating properly. Rather than modifying the taper or the quill (with the attendant risk of bu....ing it up) I simply ground a little off the tang until the taper would seat properly. I was actually surprised at how little I had to remove. Bob

    Graduate Conversion

Please don't take this the wrong way, it's a genuine question and not some sort of snide comment, but what is it about the Graduate lathe that makes it so popular with turners? It always seems to me to be so limited over the bed as to make it almost not worth bothering with compared with other...
