    Income tax on hobby work?

A set of poorly worded principles and, arguably, often intentionally misinterpreted rules... But hey, I'm not a tax adviser. Now my advice for those who die Declare the pennies on your eyes.

    New bench drill questions

I got a bit worried when the drill got delivered on a pallet. Well, it is BIG. The aldi drill looks like a flimsy toy next to it. Good news - The throat depth is big enough for most of the work that I intend to do, and there is more chuck to table clearance than I need. Bad news - it's not...

    Income tax on hobby work?

I would strongly argue that hobby work is not subject to tax, because you are not running a business or engaging in trade. You do not set off to carry the work out with a view to make a profit. That is, if you sell half a dozen items a year and do not actively advertise or present yourself as...

Sensitized to iroko, Need battery info for DIY air supply

Hi Tom, Apologies for resurrecting the thread, but as the summer is closing in and I am entering my workshop maintenance period, I am starting to look into an active air supply mask. I have been using the force 8 respirator for dust filtration and it is not great for wearing over 30 minutes a...

    New bench drill questions

Thanks. I've tried to stick to buying just a step bigger and more expensive than I think I can afford in the past and it has worked very well. The Warco seems almost identical to Axi trade ATDP13B. The Axi model has got a comment that the depth stop is not very accurate (a threaded rod and two...

    New bench drill questions

Hi All, I apologise for yet another bench drill thread, but I have got a couple daft questions that I am hoping to get get an answer to. So far I have been using an old Aldi (Powercraft) bench drill that, despite a decade of abuse, has been working reasonably well for my needs. The few things...

    Choosing a 7" vise

Hi All, I have recently decided that it's time to say goodbye to the old ikea table that I've been using to date and build myself a decent bench. I would be grateful for some ad-Vise =D> on choosing the 7" vise. My current options are: **** (Non-QR) Axi (QR) Eclipse (QR) 9" QR Dakota...

    Working with wenge

Thanks, gents. I don't have any problems planing it, so chipbreaker is set up well - was just a bit worried about this stuff having the reputation of kryptonite. What's the current position on taking items made from wenge out of the UK and the EU?

    Working with wenge

Hi All, I would be grateful for some advice. I have recently purchased some 20 year old wenge boards at a very attractive price. That was before I've read that wenge is, apparently, one of the worst woods to work with. The splinter issue is easily solved: after removing ~30 micro splinters...

Vintage Record 09 1/2 block plane

Thanks. I think we're slowly drifting off the topic here, so to sum up on the block planes - the QS has arrived, I have taken it for a spin and I much prefer it to the (cleaned-up) record. It is smaller and heavier and just forces me to limit it to using it as a block plane instead of imagining...

Vintage Record 09 1/2 block plane

Thanks. A good quality number 3 is on my list of tools to get. I understand there are some differences between the WH and rutlands planes (rutlands often having the older versions), but is there any difference between WH and woodriver? They look the same of the photos...

Vintage Record 09 1/2 block plane

Hi Tom, Guitar headstock (especially the back and the sides of it), guitar bridge blanks. Small angled surfaces (violin/mandolin wedge blanks), neck blanks, fingerboards with nasty reversing grain. Levelling a knotty area on a fingerboard where a N4 might just cause too much roughness or...

Vintage Record 09 1/2 block plane

Thanks - I already have one of my Stanley number 4s set up for that, but what about the smaller pieces where a number 4 is just too big and bulky?

Vintage Record 09 1/2 block plane

Thanks. Since the QS low-angle was on sale at rutlands, I got it anyway (Hurray!). It has just arrived and I think we'll be good friends. For dealing with difficult grain (curly/birdseye maple, figured woods, rosewood, etc), would you recommend a toothed blade for the record or a 50 degree...

Vintage Record 09 1/2 block plane

Thank you very much gents - I'll give it a bit of tlc and give it another try. Is there much use out of low-angle block planes vs standard angle?

Vintage Record 09 1/2 block plane

Apologies - I'm being daft here. I was referring to this lever here, but obviously, it's not the lateral adjustment, it's a locking lever. I think these have later been replaced with locking screws by Record.

Vintage Record 09 1/2 block plane

Hi All, I would be grateful for some advice on block planes. I have recently been given a box of old tools and among them was a Record 09 1/2. My only block plane to date is Stanley 110, so I got very excited at trying the old record out. The plane looked promising, but so far has not...

    Cheap chinese wooden block plane.

I've got their smallest plane. 3 of them actually. Perfect for shaving guitar braces, etc. One plane cracked the second time I was using it when I tapped the wedge. But at this price I can't complain.

Fixing a Microcleene MC1200 air filter

Thank you very much - the fan is now up and running.

Fixing a Microcleene MC1200 air filter

Hi All, I have in my possession an old Microcleene MC1200 (cylinder type) air filter that appears to have been hit a few times and is not currently working. I would be very grateful for your advice about how to fix it: 1) The impeller has come off the motor. By looking at it, it appears to me...
