    Wooden hand planes suggestions?

Actually, since we are talking blade & chipbreaker set-up - what's the best way of flattening a plane iron back that has a hump in the middle of the blade? I remember seeing a Sellers video where he hits the iron with a hammer, but that method doesn't seem to work on a thick old iron.

    Wooden hand planes suggestions?

Thank you very much. Oskar - by "scraps" I mean some bubinga, ash, purpleheart and ebony that are not earmarked for any upcoming project - I have no plans to use firewood!

    Wooden hand planes suggestions?

Thanks - I'll give all this a watch/read. I've seen this Veritas kit, but the screw adjuster is something I don't want - I am (potentially) looking to degrade to a complete neanderthal and only build the ones that are set by tapping the blade. I've done some work recently with a tap-set plane...

    Wooden hand planes suggestions?

Hi All, I am going through a wooden plane phase and currently considering replacing my metal planes with an arsenal of woodies. The plan is to batch produce a variety of woodies from bits of scrap i have around the shop and see if any of them work particularly well for me. Would anyone have...

Any suggestions for wood for turning rings

Thank you - I have a stack of decorative veneers, so it's good to know that they work. ABW - Am I right to guess that you mean African blackwood, not acacia (Australian blackwood)? The only wood I used to turn rings so far was African blackwood - looks great, but not just quite strong enough on...

Any suggestions for wood for turning rings

Yep. The size is the challenge. I have some burrs to experiment with - they will probably have to be soaked in epoxy to make them harder.

Any suggestions for wood for turning rings

Hi All, I would be grateful for some advice on what wood to pick for turning a pair of rings, both to go on titanium blanks. Ring one: 8mm wide, with 5mm groove to be filled with wood. Ring two: 4mm wide, with 2mm groove. So I need something that will look impressive as a thin strip embedded...

    *****'s question about induction motors

Just kidding (about the winch). ...but it does get used a lot for sanding, safe-t planing and overhead "routing". Since it gets abused so much, I am rather reluctant to invest into anything better, as I will probably kill it. A 1HP motor upgrade does look attractive though (as long as...

    *****'s question about induction motors

Thanks all - I'll sort her out o e way or another. Oh well, should have never used her as a winch. (hammer)

    *****'s question about induction motors

Thanks gents. Bearings are fine. I am hoping that replacing the start capacitor will be a nice £4 fix (will find out this week), but I do expect that I have fried the motor. Just need some spare time to have a look inside. I'll be careful with the cap. The drill is still running - although the...

The Axminster AC216TS thread - impressions and tips etc.

Well, if anyone's interested, I've filed the bolts and the fence started acting as intended. Easy fix.

    *****'s question about induction motors

Thanks - I've ordered a capacitor to give it a try. I might also take the motor apart and see if there's any damage to the windings, if I have some spare time before the cap arrives. I was just trying to figure out whether windings damage would have the same symptoms as a dying capacitor, i.e...

    *****'s question about induction motors

Thanks. Could long running under load and overheating have caused the capacitor to pack up?

    *****'s question about induction motors

Hi All, My pillar drill's motor appears to have packed up this morning (serves me right for not using the drill for anything apart from drilling  ). The motor is now seriously lacking torque when starting - it would barely spin at about 60 RPM if trying to start the drill in high gear...

    jointer blade setting

May I jump into the thread and ask if the wee magnet jigs for planer blade setting are any good? https://www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+power-too ... ta+dkpnjig I've set mine up a while ago (put a plane on the outfeed table and attached a strong magnet to its side - the magnet was strong enough to hold...

Should I include the nuts in total length measurement?

The Axminster AC216TS thread - impressions and tips etc.

Hi Bodgers, Nope - I never let the fence sit off the table as the whole thing looks like it would collapse as soon as you let the fence go (I didn't dare try it out). I've had the fence off most of the time anyway - only ripped twice to try the saw out, as I don't fancy ripping with a...

The Axminster AC216TS thread - impressions and tips etc.

That's my understanding of how it works, but the screw bottoms out about 0.3mm-ish before the fence is tightened... A shim would work. Or a file to the screws. But it's a brand new saw that has supposedly passed QC, so I'm reluctant to do anything (even though it might be easier to file the...

The Axminster AC216TS thread - impressions and tips etc.

Bodgers, It could be that I'm just daft and I'm missing something  Here's a pic of the fence-to-carriage assembly. The red line highlights the joint that is completely loose (we're talking variance of +/-2mm off true parallel with the blade when clamped & different each time). The...
