    Chess pieces advice?

That looks great, thank you. How did you join the ends?

Your experience with either the Triton MOF001 or TRA001 router?

I've been using MOF001 (Or similar - can't remember the model name but looks the same) for about 5 years and happy with it. I use a homemade router table and the top access to the router lift is handy, but not essential, as I can reach the bottom adjuster just fine. It's a nice-to-have rather...

    Starter chisel set

I have a soft set and a hard set in regular sizes. Hard is for very fine work, the soft set is for everything else, apart from nasty destructive jobs, where I might pull out an old noname jobbie that's sharp as a screwdriver, but I don't mind destroying it. Hard is Ashley Iles Mk2. These have...

    Chess pieces advice?

Howdy folks. A couple questions. 1) I've turned a couple bowls out of olive in the past and I would just leave the new bowl in the workshop for a week or two before finishing it. I read that people do all sorts of tricks with part-seasoned olive - leaving in a bag with its own shavings...

    Chess pieces advice?

Here we go - I've turned something other than a chisel handle! Second attempt at turning a piece out of scrap - this time it's the king without the "crown" bit. I'll need to check that I can accurately drill the head out on the lathe. 30g, which puts me in the right ballpark if using the steel...

    Chess pieces advice?

What finish would you recommend by the way? I've used tung oil in the past, but it seems to fade with time and needs to be re-applied now and again. Shellac perhaps? If it gets rubbed off, at least that will be from plenty of playing rather than just fading with time.

    Chess pieces advice?

PS I read that a triple-weighted king should be about 70g (!). Solid bubinga will only be about 20g, so I'll need to find a way to add 50g of weight. Round mild steel bar (20mm in diameter, 14mm high) is about 35g and I have no idea where to get the remaining 15g without making moulds and...

    Chess pieces advice?

Stauntons are nice sets, but there are so many exceptional ones available commercially, that I want to do something different, but still playable, especially for a child. The Lewis set is great, especially the chap who's biting his shield, but won't work for a child learning how to play. This...

    Chess pieces advice?

Thanks folks. Found a good chessmen chuck here: https://www.mikepeacewoodturning.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Chess-Set-AW-Feb-2020-rev.pdf Will make it today - just need to clean the dust off the lathe - the only reason I have it is because a neighbour was selling it cheap and I mainly used...

    Chess pieces advice?

Thank you for the advice. There are some good looking (and intuitive) historical 20th century soviet sets that are reasonably easy to turn, so I'll start with one of them.

    Woodworm advice

I've had a couple old violin soundboard blanks given to me a while ago and one of them had two worm exit holes. When I've bandsawed through them, I found that both blanks were completely bored out by the worm - you could even track the worms' growth by the tunnels getting wider and wider. Worm...

    Chess pieces advice?

Howdy folks. I've wanted to turn a chess set for quite a while, but never had a reason to do it, as I don't play chess. Recently my daughter got into it and I figured I'll turn a nice tournament-size set out of olive and bubinga. Perhaps make a good board to match it, if the pieces come out...

    Making planes - cautionary tale

I think there are two separate issued here. Pao Ferro is very well known for causing allergic reactions, so it looks like you might have an allergy. From memory, it is a strong sensitizer, so will make you develop worse and worse allergies that can spread to other species. If I were you, i'd...

    Wooden hand planes suggestions?

Well, here's the final trio - all from the same 2 pieces of wood. Thanks all for your advice.

    Another hand saw restoration thread

Well, I have managed to re-tooth the S&P. Made a bit of a pig's ear out of the setting and sharpening, but I'll write it off as learning experience. I went for 14 PPI, 8 degree rake. The saw cuts well - not quite as clean as my japs, but a lot faster, which is a very fair trade-off. I am more...

Very helpful - I have been following your advice when taking the saws apart and cleaning them. Thank you very much.

    Another hand saw restoration thread

Thank you. Well, it's been over a week and my axminster order with files has not been delivered yet. Just as I was about to write them a stiff letter, I realised that I forgot to click the "complete order" button. Great. No progress on sharpening. The attempt to highlight/restore the etching...

    fretboard radius plane?

I wouldn't use one personally for a) The fear of tearout - especially if shaping the fretboard after it's been glued onto an almost completed guitar. Disaster waiting to happen imho. b) Sharpening would be a nightmare. I'd say acoustic & electric guitar luthiers are quite progressive and would...

    Wooden hand planes suggestions?

Just noticed, Charnwood have Pinie plane kits on sale at only £17 each. https://www.charnwood.net/products/planes As I have now seen the light, I don't see much point in the screw adjusters, but the iron&chipbreaker alone are probably worth that money.

    Low angle jack planes

I've got the Quangsheng and find it a nice plane to use, although I don't think I use it enough to justify its cost, so might sell it soon. Of the 3 quangsheng planes that I have all are made to a very high standard and came almost ready to use out of the box. I wouldn't think twice before...
