    Safety files?

Just thinking out loud - if I was to make my own safety files, can this be done with an angle grinder?

    Safety files?

Bingo! It's called a "Joint" file. Thank you. Learn something new every day. The linked one is, unfortunately, only 1mm thick, but I guess I can keep on googling. Between that and a tri-square barrette I can get the sizes & shapes I need.

    Safety files?

Hi All, Is there a place where one can buy safety files in any shape, size & cut in the UK? E.g. I'm looking for a 2mm and 3mm thick barette file, or same thickness but with teeth only on one small edge (don't know the name for it. Kind of like a barette, but the only cutting face is on the...

    Plane - Sole Contact Points

By far the best way to get a stanley plane working really well is to stick it on ebay, then add a few £ to the proceeds and buy yourself a Quangsheng. If you want to spend time doing woodwork, do woodwork. If you want to spend time trying to set up old poorly made plane-shaped objects, then...

    Pen Mandrel

Maybe somebody can educate me - I've got lots of nice wood offcuts, but what puts me off turning pens is that all the kits seem to be very thick. A bit thick for my big manly hands, and most certainly too thick for my wee kids. Are there any slimline kits (or diy solutions) is existence? Thank...

    Record power lathe

@Cookie1975 Don't want to sound like a party pooper, but if you're literally starting from zero, I'd recommend focusing on health & safety. Any machinery has its dangers, and a lathe can cause an accident quite easily if you don't know what you're doing. I second the Rowley book, but I'd also...

    Use of lacewood

    Thanks!

    Use of lacewood

Cheap doesn't mean bad. Olive can be sourced cheap as chips and I love the stuff. I've been able to pick up cheap IRW, cuban mahogany, figured walnut at times.

Is there a place online where I can buy some cheap london plane? Looked for it a while ago and had no luck.

Perhaps a slightly controversial turning question...

It's incredible how many designs existed in each country and how the designs transformed in just over a hundred years. I reckon even if I make a set a year for myself, I won't have enough lifespan left to try all the sets I like!

Perhaps a slightly controversial turning question...

Works for me too, although I must admit it is quite limited compared to other offerings.

Perhaps a slightly controversial turning question...

PS I also originally got a lathe (Record DML24...not sure most folks here will even call it a lathe...) for peanuts to turn some chisel handles first, and I don't get excited by the knick-knacks to be honest (but I do recognise the huge amount of time & skill going into them). Making chessmen is...

Perhaps a slightly controversial turning question...

Chessmen? Some prototyping work on a 1933 Flohr-Botvinnik finals set, Bobby Fischer's 'Dubrovnik' set, and comparison between bishops: Soviet club, 1933 F-B, 'Tal' set (believed to be a "Grossmeister" equivalent designed for high-level championships in Soviet Georgia) and Dubrovnik "Minceta"...

    Keyring kit ideas?

Thank you - the prokraft ones look quite good, especially that I can fit a longer screw into them if required.

    Keyring kit ideas?

The ones that don't look cheap seem to be in M6 sizes, but I'll keep an eye out for them...

    Keyring kit ideas?

Hi All. I've accumulated some various odd chessmen while making chess sets & trying out designs. I reckon rather than chucking them into the bin, I can polish them up and turn into keyrings, bottle openers, wine stoppers, etc. In regard to keyrings, can somebody recommend a solid, high quality...

    A little safety warning

@ALB I take it the patient wasn't wearing a face shield, violating an even more important lathe H&S rule? Question: What would have been the likely damage if he had one of them acrylic face shields on when the piece flew off? PS I'm always careful when working with machinery, but with me, the...

Advice requested: veneering with glue film

Same works for titebond. Apply a thin/moderate layer of classic titebond on both sides, give it the minimum time it needs to surface dry, then press together and run a veneering iron over it. Simples.

    Woodworm!

Nasty buggers. But if you had no woodworm in your shop before, then the environment has got to be unsuitable for them to lay eggs and hatch? Too dry? So you should be fine anyway, even with these buggers crawling around... Just a thought. Kill as many as you can find - it's quite satisfying. A...
