Replacing bearings on an old planer

Hi All, I have recently adopted an old 6" Warco planer (jointer), (which is a clone of the standard 6" Delta joiner), and after a good clean it seems to be working just fine if not for the horrible racket made by the bearings. A quick inspection revealed that one of the cutter head bearings and...

Bandsaw advice - Axi JBS160 (Delta 14" clone)

Gents, Are there any reasonably-priced urethane bandsaw tyre suppliers in the UK? As I am going through the saw set-up, I thought I'd swap the old tyres for new ones. Thanks.

Bandsaw advice - Axi JBS160 (Delta 14" clone)

Sunnybob, thank you for saving me £12. I've checked the wiring diagram on the back of the switch and it was, indeed, wired backwards.

Bandsaw advice - Axi JBS160 (Delta 14" clone)

A quick question about the electrics - is it common for NVR switches to buzz when power is supplied to the machine but the machine is not running? Once the machine is running, the buzzing disappears. A replacement switch is only about £16 in case the buzzing indicates a fault, so will be easy...

Bandsaw advice - Axi JBS160 (Delta 14" clone)

Thanks for the advice. I've decided to burn through a few blades before I get the riser. Just out of interest, which kit did you buy (there seems to be a lot of them from various manufacturers).

Bandsaw advice - Axi JBS160 (Delta 14" clone)

Hi ****, I am near Edinburgh, so a bit far from you. I remember reading that ebony, rosewood, maple will also work if microwaved in oil (?), but cannot find the link to that webpage. Are there any tricks to cutting these blocks, or shall I just replicate the dimensions of the original plastic ones?

Bandsaw advice - Axi JBS160 (Delta 14" clone)

Thank you for your advice. I did not realise that resawing can be done without the guides - in this case I don't think I need the riser block, especially considering the 3/4hp motor. The current guides have plastic blocks instead of bearings and the blocks are worn off. I've read that the...

Bandsaw advice - Axi JBS160 (Delta 14" clone)

Hi All, Following some advice from this forum, I have recently purchased the biggest saw I could comfortably fit into my current workshop, which happened to be a 14" axminster JBS160 saw that appears to be a clone of Delta 14" or Grizzly G0555 and I would be grateful for some tips about...

Newbie woodworker questions - dust extraction

Thanks. I like the idea of putting the dust collection outside and freeing up the space. Bandsaw wise, I recon I'll go for 14" or 16" until I get myself a better workshop. Something along the lines of Record Power 300 or 350. Startrite if I can find one locally. Any other suggestions?

Newbie woodworker questions - dust extraction

Thanks. Yes, a workbench is on the to-do list. I've got a whole book on them, but would be interested in your advice on what design to choose. I was leaning towards a sturdy flat table with various jigs clamped or bolted onto it. There are things where, imho, hand tools are not the way to go...

Newbie woodworker questions - dust extraction

Thank you, ttrees. "Hope your enjoying your new shop " - not after reading the toxicity table! :( So, downdraft table coming up on my list of tools to have, as well as a 24" fan to blow all them nasties out of the door.

Newbie woodworker questions - dust extraction

Thank you very much, ttrees. Most of the guitar wood is trying to kill me. Perhaps not the best choice of the hobby. Going to change my priorities and set up a decent dust system first, before I even bother getting a bandsaw. Thank you for the link - there is a lot of information to process...

Newbie woodworker questions - dust extraction

Thanks. I think that 300kg on wheels will go right through my wooden floor down to the concrete base below the workshop! The bandsaw budget can probably stretch and I can wait until a good one comes up locally, but SWMBO is already not happy with all the workshop set-up expenses. Depends on...

Newbie woodworker questions - dust extraction

Thanks. Hand tools or power tools, there is still a need for a good quiet sucker as there will be a fair amount of scraping and hand sanding. What would be your suggestions for a "proper" extractor? Where does the linked charnwood fit in? How loud is the airflow in the extractor compared to a...

Newbie woodworker questions - dust extraction

Thanks! I was hoping to keep things simple and not go into 3 phase. Safely upgrading the electrics to 16A might also be a bit tricky without having to look at re-doing all the electrics in the house (I live in an old-ish house and don't fully agree with how the wiring was done, but hey, I'm not...

Newbie woodworker questions - dust extraction

Hi All, I have been lurking around this forum for months and finally decided to post, seeking some advice on setting up a workshop for woodwork (mainly lutherie). I am currently looking to get some woodworking machinery and I am planning to have a medium-sized bandsaw, router/saw table...

    Shed workshop questions

Gents, I thought I'd thank you all for your advice (better late than never!). Your advice was very helpful and I have been enjoying the workshop for the past year and a half.

    Shed workshop questions

I've done some more reading and came up with a little plan (attached). Base: As I'm going to landscape the garden anyway, I'll end up with a pile of old paving slabs that I now intend to use for a base. Any suggestions on how to bed them? Is geo textile under the shed a good idea or a recipe...

    Shed workshop questions

Thanks again! I've spoken to a couple local shed builders and one of them suggested putting the shed on a wooden frame to avoid having to put a concrete base in. If I understand correctly that's the same as the sleepers approach? Seems to be the cheapest option but I'm not sure how long the...
