    Repolishing granite...

I'd agree. I did the same and bought a DAS 6 Pro D/A polisher. As well as paying for itself removing scratches from our cars, it's an excellent polisher for granite workstops. As with car bodywork, the secret to avoiding swirl marks or heat is not to press down on it and use it at a moderate...

    Record vices

I rescued and did up a Record #52 and used Beech jaw liners on mine. Been using it almost daily for over 3 years since and they're still in great shape. I've also used Birch Ply before now which has had several coats of Osmo poly-x applied and they lasted surprisingly well too.

    Upping my sanding game

Abranet mesh discs for me. Better than anything else I've used for finishing work and the hook and loop system works just fine with my Dewalt sander. I currently use a bog standard dewalt R/O sander but will replace that with a Metabo 150mm. For those not already aware, 3M have brought out...

    Titebond

Yes, I agree and too much causes swelling of the veneer as it soaks up the glue resulting in creases and bubbles as well as creep. I tend to apply a thin coat to both surfaces and either use a burnishing block, working from the centre out, or a rubber roller to apply pressure before clamping...

    Keeping kiln dried timber dry

Short of keeping a dehumidifier going and stacking cut timber with plenty of air gaps, there's nothing much you can do to prevent it gaining MC %. I have, for a long time, stored my ply sheets indoors much against Mrs R's wishes and taken them out for cutting and jointing in the workshop for...

    Birch ply alternative?

Yes, but could have been a dodgy batch. Only had 2 sheets.

    Timber suppliers, PAR Walnut

British Hardwoods are where I've gone previously. It's currently £130 rough sawn there for the cheapest choice - 1" thick planked sections per cubic ft. That's now looking a little pricey against other suppliers hence my asking what others might recommend. I was pointed to English Woodlands...

    Birch ply alternative?

I recently used some Wisa in 12mm thickness and found it was pretty full of voids so wouldn't buy again except for utility work. Could have been a specific batch issue but it wasn't that good. I found gaboon ply better tbh which I used in a couple of workshop builds. Took a decent finish too.

    Birch ply alternative?

I recently had to build a 1.2m tall CD rack and used MDF which I then veneered. Plenty strong enough, easy to work with and a lot cheaper than Birch ply. Filled up with CD's it's almost immovable but the spans are fairly narrow. If it were me, I'd use MDF and just limit the spans by...

    Sub £1000 Planer Thicknesser

At the budget end it may be worth taking a look at the Vevor 12.5 inch thicknesser which comes with a stand so you can tuck it all away when not in use. The Triton one also gets some solid good reviews and can be stand mounted so worth considering too? Cheap as chips and reportedly does the...

    Timber suppliers, PAR Walnut

Hi Linus. Yes, I looked at their costs which were pretty much on par. eg to get the 20 linear metres by ordering 3m 200wide x 25mm including delivery was £190. I know costs have risen a lot but it's worth shopping around even if to save £25 as that's half the cost roughly of another saw blade...

    Timber suppliers, PAR Walnut

Been quoted close on £160 for 20m (25sqr). Just wondered if someone knows of less expensive outlets, I know it's premium priced timber hence trying to reduce costs as much as possible.

    Timber suppliers, PAR Walnut

I've seen costs go through the roof from my usual timber suppliers and am after PAR AB Walnut or rough sawn that I can plane and cut to width. Thickness I'm after is an inch/25mm and I need a total of around 20m at 25mm width for a framing project. Can anyone recommend a reasonable cost...

    Dust extractor

I have a sheppach HA1000 extractor which is similar but half the price. Very good extraction if a little noisy.

    Table Saw Blade

Try the UK made Shark blades. They do a 254/30/80T professional range blade for very reasonable money. I tried one of their Ultra 80T blades (same blade but different coating) and it cut superbly and is equally as good and lasted as long as our Axcaliber Premium 60T blade. tbh, you can't go...

    planing long boards

I'd clamp the board between two blocks of timber on each saw horse with those blocks firmly clamped to the saw horse and plane vertically, if that makes sense?

Do you make angle cuts often? I mean anything other than the common mitre cuts for skirting or tapers for table legs?

Yes, all mine are home designed and built but I also build them commercially as my business is hifi speaker design and manufacture.

Angled cuts of Oak for legs, in this case for some loudspeaker corner cabinets using the bench saw

Proof that end grain joints are stronger than side-grain joints

As we're being logical, it is also widely accepted that a "proof of theorem" is a logical explanation (not description) of why a certain theory is true even if it can be explained more fully. There are false theories where it has been found that the evidence is challenged and disproved but...
