Analysis paralysis: Should I cut a board only to edge joint it again?

That was going to be the next question! I'd figured that it might be easier to get the members aligned when making one wide board, but that introduces a weakness because in order to get the x, I'd have to cut through an entire member, so it would just be relying on the jointing. That said I'm...

Analysis paralysis: Should I cut a board only to edge joint it again?

Nice idea, but in that configuration the bottles sometimes catch on the leading edge of the back board when sliding them in. Very minor irritant, and only happens on the top triangle, but one that I've encountered and don't have to repeat.

Analysis paralysis: Should I cut a board only to edge joint it again?

Feel daft asking this... I need to create a flat piece (ca. 350mm x 700mm) out of solid ash. The boards I'm making it out of are 240mm wide. Therefore I need to edge joint just under 1.5 boards to make the 350mm width. Question: Should I A) cut three equal-width (ca. 117mm wide) pieces and...

What's your rule of thumb for number of loose tenons?

I sometimes do some non standard dimensions. In particular the rails get a bit narrow. How narrow before it only gets to one domino? Is it simply a case of whether 2 will fit? Do you ever bring your domino closer than 37mm to the edge?

What's your rule of thumb for number of loose tenons?

When joining with loose tenons, what's your rule of thumb for the number of loose tenons you'll place in one joint? In other words, I'm looking for realistic numbers to put in the table below - I've just stuck any old numbers in for now. Assume 18mm MDF, standard kitchen carcass type...

MDF or Ply for the back of a heavy picture frame?

Good info. Thankfully, the osb leakage problem shouldn't affect my case because I've got the 9mm pinboard between the osb and the artwork.

MDF or Ply for the back of a heavy picture frame?

Yes - this has been my experience as a layperson. But that's buying from the diy sheds or the timber merchant. Using Birch ply earlier this year for some furniture making was a revelation in terms of flatness and rigidity :), but also price :( Good to know that osb isn't as liable to distort...

MDF or Ply for the back of a heavy picture frame?

Ooh - Or what about 11mm OSB? I've got a spare sheet hanging around here. Or is that more liable to deform over time?

MDF or Ply for the back of a heavy picture frame?

I'm making a glorified world map pin board and putting it into a frame to hang on the wall as a pseudo artwork. I need a back that will stay flat. The overall size will be around 1600mm x 1200mm The pin board itself is Sundeala K which is reasonably heavy and is very 'saggy' - i.e. it will bow...

Basic question: How deep to rebate tongue and groove into framing for sheds?

Ah! I was planning on emulating the one in the pictures below. Bad idea?

    What diameter & length dowel?

I'm probably going to make some sort of dowel jig to fit in/on/around a Bosch S2 drill stand that I just scored on ebay. This approach is very probably suboptimal, but I reckon with some care and proper preparation, I might be alright.

Basic question: How deep to rebate tongue and groove into framing for sheds?

I'm building a bike shed out of pressure treated 14mm thick tongue and groove softwood with a nominal width of 95mm. I'm using pressure treated softwood framing/carcassing with a 45 x 45mm cross section (finished). What's a sensible depth to rebate into the framing on the sides and at the...

    What diameter & length dowel?

I had originally designed a bigger rack, but it's taken me so long to get round to actually making it that I've struck off a section of the design as my stash has dwindled! Yeah the weight is a bit of a concern. Each bottle is pretty much 1kg on the nose - maybe even by design (750ml plonk...

    What diameter & length dowel?

I'm planning on making a wine rack out of solid ash. Part of the rack is like this: I'm planning on fixing the horizontal rails (shown in green above) using only dowels and glue so that no fixings are visible. The dimensions of a rails are 20mm x 20mm x 340mm. The vertical supports are 19mm...

Handheld vertical drilling - Jig, press or other?

Great advice everyone. thank you. I do have a top-notch (although big & heavy) router, which is under-used. So may well knock up a jig and use that for the dowel jobs because I have a lot of identical components to drill. The drill press option might be the right path for the sheet material...

Handheld vertical drilling - Jig, press or other?

Hi all, I need to drill a couple of hundred holes and need them to be perpendicular to the surface of the wood. Anyone got any tips (aside from using a pillar drill)? Some will be for dowels for glue-up and will have a set depth in solid timber material to about 15mm, others will go all the...

    Edge banding without specialised machinery

Do you need specialised equipment to glue on the thicker stuff or is it possible to get a good finish with just glue and clamps?

    Edge banding without specialised machinery

Wow - what an amazing offer! Thank you so much. Unfortunately I'm in Balham so definitely not worth a trip round London for the couple of hundred quid im trying to save. It's Ash edging onto an Ash veneer mdf board in this case. All straight edges. Mostly edging all round, or sometimes three...
