Black and White property paint choice

Linseed oil paint is wondwrful stuff. A good quality paint applied correctly is both easy to use and long lasting. It does not trap moisture.

    Rob Cosman Planing Technique

I don't know that much about Krenov, haven't read his books. But that he worked for Malmsten says something about him. It is also woth to remember that Verkstadsskolan was a school were the students were prepared to work in the furniture industry and were expected both to be able to efficiently...

    Rob Cosman Planing Technique

He got his education at Carl Malmstens verkstadsskola and later worked for Malmsten. He was part of several exihibitions and seems to havet been readonably established as as an artisan before his book. Most of the famous woodworkers like Frid, Peters etc are mostly famous among woodworkers...

    Push sticks again.......

It seems very cynical to push expensive and dangerous products where some simple and cheap push stick would do.

    Push sticks again.......

I don't understand. Is there a controversy surrounding push sticks?! I thought that it was obvious that using push sticks is a good idea.

Skarsten scraper . . . or suggestions for a replacement please

Bahco scrapers are brilliant. Speedheater scrapers combined with a speedheater is even better though for removing a lot of paint.

    Wanted Decent quality splitting axes

No, Hultafors ans Gränsfors has nothing to do with each other except that they both produce axes in Sweden. Gränsfors however has the same owner as woolpower who produce excellent woolen undergarments in Östersund.

Double / no bevel - theory question

I don't know that much knives outside traditional swedish crafts (and there I am by no means an expert!). However, I do know that grinding without a secondary bevel has a very long history in the nordic countries. Probably because a knife was not a specialised tool. Especially among the sami...

Double / no bevel - theory question

I think they are overtheorising it. Traditionally most grinding of knives in scandinavia was done on large sandstone grinding wheels and so were somewhat hollow ground. Using a wet sandstone grinding wheel (or tormek without jigs) makes it easy to grind them freehand since you can look at the...

    Making Oil Paint.

This is how it is! Linseed oil paint does change over time, bit there are no sudden failiures like with acrylic or alkyd. It ages with grace and can be refreshed with another coat of linseed oil.

    Making Oil Paint.

I usually add some extra zinc oxide (as a premixed paint to my base coat. Maybe 20-30% to my selected colour. Then I make a mix of 50% raw linseed oil 35% paint and 15℅ gum turpentine. Depending on how dry the wood is the amount of linseed oil can be decreased. After that I paint with two layers...

    Making Oil Paint.

Linseed oil is fascinating stuff indeed. And a whole lot of fun to work with! I've used a lot of linseed oil paint both for interior and exterior work. I love the fact that you can use the same paint for both indoors and outdoors and on almost any material. It is also technically superior on...

Paul Sellers says cap iron position doesn’t matter

In Sweden the tradition among cabinet makers was to cut pins first. The book I am refering to was written from the point of view of trade practice. Like Sellers, probably not.

Paul Sellers says cap iron position doesn’t matter

Paul Sellers has produced a lot of good videos and generally seems to make genuine and good recommendations. The problem is however that he has a way of dismissing everything that is done differently like he does. For instance he writes that: "In the overall scheme of things I might reason that...

    Mid range/budget chisels

Bahco used to be part of Sandvik (Sandvik bought bahco in 1991), but it is part of snap-on tools since the early 2000's. The chisels are made in Portugal now. I don't know about the quality of newer bahco chisels, but when production moved from Sweden they stopped producing the 956 series which...

    Stock Dimensions for Making Boxes

Pen and paper is the best advise in this thread so far. If you would you could make a mock up out of cardboard. Also the tip of deciding what the box is for and sizing it after that is a good one. I think you are overthinking this. Either just make 1:1 drawings or start making the boxes, you'll...

What is going on with wood prices right now

The demand for sawn timber has increased dramatically in Sweden during the pandemic. A lot being bought by diy:ers remodeling and building (In my opinion) rather uneccessary decks in impregnated pine. There has been talk of a shortage of certain dimensions and qualities. That might affect the...

    Tree / Timber Identification

Yup! Salix Caprea. The flowers are a very important source of food for bumble bees when they wake up in spring.

    Tree / Timber Identification

The cones come out in autumn. look around the tree on the ground or see if any still are stuck to the tree. If there are any catkins it is probably a Salix, and most probably Salix Caprea. Sometimes willows can look similar to alders before they form the more typical bark. Both willows and...

    Tree / Timber Identification

Are there any small cones? Alder form small cones that look similar to cones from coniferous trees? Also, when you mill lumber, try to split through the pith and even remove it. Are you planning to work the wood green or try to dry it?
